Fed Square

Fed Square

Fed Square is Melbourne's favourite meeting place as well as a unique cultural precinct which brings together a creative mix of attractions, museums and galleries with its many restaurants, cafes and bars.

Fed Square is also a hub of Melbourne activities with function centres, guided tours and over 2000 events held annually, including multicultural festivals, markets, film screenings, sporting events and much more.

Anything But Square

The square is the focal point for all events, festivals and activities, capable of holding up to 10,000 people at one time.

Paved in Western Australian sandstone cobbles, the square rises to a gentle incline offering spectacular views of the City, Southbank and the Yarra River.

The versatile layout with its large screen and stage is surrounded by restaurants, cafes and bars making it a casual seating for outdoor performances and exhibitions.

The Square is a popular meeting point for many visitors to the city, a familiar landmark where countless people can be found enjoying a quiet afternoon with a book, live music on the stage, or a sports game on the big screen..

Festive gatherings at Fed Square are vibrant and occasions, bringing people together with as much openness as the Square holds itself!

Museums | Galleries | Attractions

A remarkable galleria-like structure made of glass, steel and zinc, the Atrium is flanked by the Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, the function centre (known as Zinc), bars, cafes, shops and provides access to the Yarra River and the main Square.

Its orientation draws inspiration from Melbourne's traditional laneways and arcades. The design and building of the Atrium was a major challenge, with little if any precedence in the world.

It is a street-like space, five-stories high with glazed walls and roof. The exposed metal structure and glazing patterns follow the fractal geometry used elsewhere in the precinct's building facades.

The Atrium plays host to many special exhibitions and art installations, many of which add to the already impressive appearance from within.

Uniquely wrapping around the northern and eastern side of the Transport building, the Digital Facade will showcase bespoke art programs and content, stream live National and International sporting events and showcase other iconically Melbourne cultural events and activities.

Screen content is aired 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Parks & Spaces

To the east of Fed Square is one of Melbourne's newest parks, Birrarung Marr, a wide expansive park on land reclaimed from railway yards.

Wide, open spaces and large, sculptured terraces have been specially designed to host some of Melbourne's best events and festivals throughout the year and a theatre-like space at the river's edge will easily accommodate large crowds. The tops of these terraces give way to spectacular views of the City, Southbank, Domain and the Yarra River.

Birrarung means "river of mists"in the Woiwurrung language of the Wurundjeri people who originally inhabited the area, while Marr means "side of the river".

The park brings focus towards the river and will become a day-to-day space in which people can relax or take part in a variety of activities against a backdrop of native flora in creative and exciting patterns.
