This week there's a celebration of African culture with the inaugural Emerge in the West presenting a free day of festivities in Footscray. For a taste of Oriental flare, there's the Japan Festival at Box Hill while further afield in Warburton there's the Nordic Festival entertainment that includes a Viking Camp and market stalls to be pillaged.

For music aficionados, it's time to get into the swing of things again with the return of Stonnington Jazz Festival, and for food lovers there's the High Country Harvest with a large program of events held throughout Victoria's North East.

We also have a great giveaway this week with Double Passes up for grabs for opening night of the upcoming Cuban dance spectacular, Ballet Revolucion!

A Jazzy Emergence of Culture


Stonnington Jazz Festival Stonnington Jazz Festival, held at various venues that include Chapel Off Chapel, Malvern Town Hall and Red Bennies, prevents an impressive program of performances from the very best jazz artists this country has to offer with seasoned musicians and new performers covering the broad spectrum of genres in jazz.

Emerge in the West Emerge in the West brings the popular multicultural event of Emerge Festival to Footscray's Nicholson Street with a free day of celebrations that include a massive, feel-good street party welcoming amazing new cultures and talents from local African communities, market stalls, live music, a fashion parade and more.

Nordic Festival Nordic Festival, held in Warburton, is a celebration of all things Scandinavian with highlights of the festival including a Viking Camp that creates a truly inspiring and educational experience, market stalls offering a variety of food and Nordic products, cinema screenings and artworks by Finnish-Australian artist Satu Kirk.

Japan Festival Japan Festival, presented by Japan Club of Victoria and held at Box Hill Town Hall and TAFE, showcases the unique traditions of Japan with performances of traditional dance, drumming, Kendo and more along with exhibits of Ikebana, Bonsai, Model railways and stalls offering foods, ceramics, toys, Kimonos and crafts.

Good Beer Week Good Beer Week presents a wide range of events that celebrate quality beer and the people that brew and drink it. With over 140 events that include dinners, masterclasses, showcases and tours, the festival features brewers from all over the world with 115 venues taking part across Melbourne and regional Victoria.

Great Trentham Spudfest Great Trentham Spudfest is a free family-friendly celebration of the spirit of the community in Trentham and the potatoes harvested in the area. With a large variety of potatoes grown in the area, the festival features cooking events, games, live music and historical tours of machinery and the Spudhuts, shacks once used by harvesters.
When: Saturday May 18 - 9am to 5pm



West Side Shorty





West Side Shorts West Side Shorts, presented by Angry Productions, is a monthly film night held at the Customs House Hotel located in Williamstown, offering the chance for cinema buffs to see fantastic short films made by local talent and also to talk and network with local filmmakers and actors following the screenings on the night.

NeWays...


Status Quo Status Quo, held at James Makin Gallery in Collingwood, is an exhibition of works by Kristin McIver. An examination of consumer identity in the era of hyper-capitalism, her use of neon, steel and concrete to create unique sculptures explores how social media has both redefined the way we connect, and reshaped our identity.
When: May 16 to June 8

Stencils To Screens Stencils To Screens, held at Hawthorn Studio and Gallery, is an exhibition of works by Ralf Kempken. The winner of last year's Australian Stencil Art Prize, Kempken's stencilled paintings of Melbourne's iconic trams, skyline and cafes create stunning images that play with negative and positive spaces to great effect.
When: May 18 to June 18

Viva La Vintage


Love Vintage Show Love Vintage Show, held at the Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton, showcases exhibitors from all over Australia selling a fantastic range of collectable and vintage items. The show also features fashion parades, free workshops, presentations, music and dancing and special guest Ashley Gold from TV's Hardcore Pawn.

Insomnia Cat Came To Stay Insomnia Cat Came To Stay, performed at Southbank's Malthouse Theatre, is a story of the sleep deprived told through an electric fusion of theatre, original animation and music both familiar and original as performer Joanne Sutton draws the audience into an evocative tale that's obsessive, poetic, lyrical and deeply funny.

No Child No Child, written and performed by Nilaja Sun, is a solo show that depicts the battle-ground that US public education has become. Told with pep and humour, the captivating production draws on Nilaja Sun's eight years of experience in teaching at some of the toughest schools in New York. It's held at St Kilda's Theatre Works.

Go Do That Woohoo That You Do So Well...


The Woohoo Revue The Woohoo Revue, a fiendishly talented sextet of horns, strings and drums who have forged their reputation as a festival favourite throughout Australia with their signature sound, will be performing at St Kilda MeMo Theatre where they'll be joined by Abbie Cardwell and the Chicano Rockers along with Lily and King.

Deborah Conway and Willy Zygier Deborah Conway and Willy Zygier will be performing at Kew Court House. With songs about the stuff that makes people furious, miserable, wistful, amused, curious and even occasionally happy, their performances of truly beautiful songs are presented with a parlour-like intimacy that holds audiences spellbound.
