This week Melbourne clumsily takes to the air with the return of Moomba and its much loved Birdman Rally. There's also some fine French cinema at hand with the Alliance Francaise French Film Festival can-canning its way into town.

Free as a Birdman

Moomba Festival Moomba Festival, Melbourne's biggest free festival for the community, celebrates our colourful, energetic city with a great program that includes old favourites like the Birdman Rally, water sport activities, live music, the ever popular Moomba Parade and more with sports competitions, kids' activities and nightly fireworks.
When: Friday to Monday, March 8 to 11

ChillOut Festival ChillOut Festival, Daylesford's gay and lesbian festival, is the largest celebration of its kind to take place in regional and rural Australia. Celebrating 15 years, the festival will offer their biggest program ever with Victoria's spa town hosting a Carnival Day, comedy gala, tours and dining events, music and much more.

Ballarat Begonia Festival Ballarat Begonia Festival is a celebration of gardening, arts and culture in one of Victoria's most prominent historical towns. With the Ballarat Botanical Gardens showcasing begonias in over 200 varieties, the festival also has markets, a Twilight Cinema, children's activities, free vintage tram rides and much more.

Savage Beast Soothers

Oakleigh Music Festival Oakleigh Music Festival showcases local talent and the diversity of cultures in Monash with music inspired events that include live performances, exhibitions, film screenings and many other highlights that lead up to the popular Oakleigh Music Festival Day, a free community celebration held in Warrawee Park.

MusicFest - Phillip Island MusicFest - Phillip Island presents two days of eclectic roots, folk, indie-rock and bluegrass with performances held in the grounds of the Phillip Island Winery. Along with leading local musicians, special guests include Stonefield, Kutcha Edwards, Mat McHugh and three-time Golden Guitar winners, the Davidson Brothers.

Inverloch Jazz Festival Inverloch Jazz Festival, held across the long weekend, presents top class jazz in the beauty of South Gippsland. With a program that features the popular Jazz Picnic in the Park on Labour Day, there's big band, traditional jazz and more with Anita Harris and Friends, Cul de Sac, Firing Squad and many other guests.

Vive La Cine

Alliance Francaise French Film Festival Alliance Francaise French Film Festival, now in its 24th year, offers an ambitious program of over 40 films. , commercially released in France last year with genres that include romance and comedy, thrillers, documentaries, animation and more. Screenings are held at various Palace Cinemas and Kino Cinemas.

Culture in a Jam

Will Coles Will Coles, famously known for his uncommissioned public installations, will be showing his first-ever exhibition in a Melbourne gallery. The exhibition at Dark Horse Experiment Art Gallery is a chance to see larger sculptures by the famous culture jammer, whose works often cast a critical eye on Australian consumerism.

Chance Upon Nothing Chance Upon Nothing, showing at MARS Gallery in Port Melbourne, is an exhibition of works by Bill Sampson. Using a technique known as marbling, Sampson's craft borders on alchemy by incorporating numerous methods that encourage the mediums to play off of one another and create striking, kinetic scenes.

We Don't Need No Steenkin' Boundaries

The Shape Of Things The Shape Of Things is Neil LaBute's challenging play about how far one would go for love and to please another as it follows a couple's intense relationship as it spirals out of control. Featuring Josh Blau, Emily Wheaton, Nick Brien and Stephanie Lillis, performances are held at Melbourne's No Vacancy Gallery.
When: March 7 to 24

The Girl With The 3 Sleeved Shirt The Girl With The 3 Sleeved Shirt, held at the Bohemia Cabaret Club in South Melbourne, is an uncompromising play that's not for the faint of heart. Set in a mental institution during the 1940s, the play reveals the stories of an array of patients with illnesses that can be just as confronting as the remedies of the time.

Look Up and You'll See

Half the Sky Half the Sky, held at Melbourne Recital Centre in Southbank, brings together an acclaimed line-up of performers to help raise funds for women in Asia and the Pacific and celebrate International Women's Day. With Indira Naidoo as MC, special guests include Clare Bowditch, Deborah Conway, Willy Zygier and Em Rusciano.
When: Thursday March 7 - 7:30pm

Valentino Flamenco Ensemble Valentino Flamenco Ensemble, one of Australia's leading flamenco groups will perform at The Owl and the Pussycat in Richmond. Having studied under Carlos Heredia, one of Spain's most renowned flamenco guitarists, Valentino is a passionate performer who captures the true essence of flamenco music and dance.

University of Melbourne Graduate Careers Fair University of Melbourne Graduate Careers Fair, taking place at Carlton's Royal Exhibition Building, offers students the opportunity to visit over 130 booths where they can talk with employers from Business, Government, Engineering, Environments and many more sectors with employers eager to fill their graduate positions.

Melbourne's Psychic Expo Melbourne's Psychic Expo, with their next event held at Northcote Town Hall, showcases a wide range of stalls that offer jewellery, crystals and books. Visitors to the expo will also be able to have personal sessions with mediums, spirit artists and tarot readers along with massage, Reiki and natural healing services.

Sunset on My Harvest Makes Me Happy

Sunset Harvest Market Sunset Harvest Market, presented as part of Feasting in Footscray, presents the season's finest produce including vegetables, fruit, breads, honey and other delicious treats for you to buy and sample. Held at Footscray Railway Station, the market will also offer a warm atmosphere with live music at the event.

Melbourne Food & Wine Festival Melbourne Food & Wine Festival, one of Australia's most celebrated culinary festivals, offers a delicious program of events. The Bikes of Madison County

Bendigo International Madison Bendigo International Madison, Australia's largest cycling and athletic carnival, brings together Olympic and World Champion cyclists to compete in a street race or criterium prior to even more action at the Tom Flood Sports Centre. There'll also be a presentation of fireworks displays held on the final evening of the carnival.
