Students of The Glass Room Gallery: A Collective Unfolding
@ Montsalvat
A Collective Unfolding brings together artists from The Glass Room Gallery studio at Montsalvat, each at a different stage of their creative path, yet united in a shared commitment to growth and expression.
For some, this exhibition marks a first step into public showing; for others, it represents a continued deepening of practice. Each work reflects a process of trust - the courage to listen inwardly and allow what is unseen to gradually take form. Rather than focusing on outcome alone, this exhibition honours the unfolding itself: the quiet persistence, the discoveries, the challenges, and the moments of clarity that arise through making.
Beyond the individual works, a quiet community has formed within the studio. Week by week, artists gather not only to paint, but to encourage one another, celebrate completed works, and share moments of connection during the morning break. In their own way, many have become friends - offering support, laughter, and genuine care for one another both within the studio and in their lives beyond it.
Together, these artists reveal not only finished works, but the living process behind them - a shared journey of becoming visible.
Mary Caia Bio - Artist and Studio Mentor
Mary Caia is a Melbourne-based artist and illustrator whose work captures the quiet dialogue between inner reflection and the natural world. Working primarily in oil and mixed media on paper, her paintings explore emotional depth through light, texture, and form. Influenced by the human figure, nature, and symbolic imagery, her compositions often emerge intuitively-built through translucent layers that invite the viewer into
stillness and contemplation. Her background in illustration lends a refined sense of detail and structure, while her painterly surfaces reveal a spontaneous and deeply personal energy.
Mary studied Illustration and Fine Art in Melbourne, receiving a scholarship for her work, and has continued to develop her practice through ongoing exploration and teaching. She works from her studio at Montsalvat in Eltham, where she runs The Glass Room Studio, mentoring students through drawing and oil painting classes. Through her teaching, Mary encourages artists to develop their own visual language while fostering a supportive and engaging environment for creative exploration. Her recent works on paper and canvas reflect a quiet evolution-stories told through light, gesture, and an emotional connection to the seen and unseen world
