Newsletter | #269 | What's On this Week |
Welcome to this week's Melbourne events, exhibitions, sports and community guide for Tuesday to Monday, February 28 to March 5, 2012.
This week... with the leap-year upon us and that extra day wedged into the week, there's just as much wedged into the events calendar with the beginnings of Melbourne's very own Mad March.
Amidst the recent dramas surrounding the suggested (and abandoned) move of Melbourne Festival to an already jam-packed March, you'll also find an ever-growing trend of events that are festivals only by namesake for the most part.
It makes for the odd bit of head-scratching while deciding how to categorise events sometimes. It doesn't make it any easier with the just as popular trend of festivals offering shelter to all and sundry, taking in all manner of events beneath their colourful, festive umbrellas.
One such festival to adopt such a thing is the Soundwave music festival, which although now sold out, does offer some respite to the punters with a host of concerts held elsewhere by featured performers - otherwise known as Sidewaves.
You'll also find the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival on this week, and while many of those events are quick to sell out also, foodies can find some respite of their own with a host of other venues offering fine dining - otherwise known as Cafe's.

Trivia & Humour
Golden Moments
We're Happy Little.. Parwills?
Vegemite was not only invented in Melbourne by Fred Walker but every jar of Vegemite 'ever made' has come from the Melbourne factory at Fisherman Bend.
The name "Vegemite"was selected out of a hat by Fred Walker's daughter, Sheilah. However, in 1928 its name was changed to "Parwill", using the advertising slogan, "Marmite but Parwill"- a play on words for an ad campaign aimed at the rival product Marmite.
The cheeky, but convoluted, advertising had little effect and the name was returned to Vegemite.
