Welcome to this week's Melbourne events, exhibitions, sports and community guide for Tuesday to Monday, September 13 to 19.
This week... Spring has truly sprung with the onset of snuffly noses, itchy eyes and the return of the Tesselaar Tulip Festival along with several other stalwarts that have come into season. Among them, there's also the Guildford Banjo Jamboree and the Montsalvat Jazz Festival for music lovers out there. Those wanting a bit of spice to their musical festivities might want to check out the Chilean Latin American September Festival with a program of music, dance, food, art and more.

French Cooking Classes, presented by Chateau Cuisine, specialises in regional French cookery with classes held at Sandringham's Sandybeach Centre. With lessons in cooking macarons, souffles, pastry, regional dishes and more, they also offer children's classes during school holidays.

Chilean Latin American September Festival, held at Sandown Racecourse, is Melbourne's most anticipated Latin event with the festival now expanded to also showcase the food, music, dancing, crafts and more of Latin American countries such as Mexico, El Salvador and Colombia.

Mullum Mullum Festival, celebrating the ecological values of the Mullum Mullum Creek valley in Maroondah, Whitehorse and Manningham. Home to some of urban Melbourne's best preserved remnant bushlands, there'll be events at various sites including environmental tours in Warrandyte.

Tesselaar Tulip Festival is a vibrant festival celebrating Spring with fields that feature more than half a million beautiful flowers. Held in Silvan just an hour away from Melbourne, themed weekends throughout the festival offer include concerts, special kids' days and more.

Overload Poetry Festival, Australia's premier poetry festival, celebrates the vibrant poetry scene with a broad program of entertainment and special events. With poets from across the globe and Melbourne brought together, the festival is held at various venues.

Music & Arts Festivals
Guildford Banjo Jamboree, a String Band Festival held in Guildford near Daylesford and Castlemaine, offers a great weekend of entertainment with performances, workshops and instrument displays along with a vibrant Old Time Bush Dance held on the Saturday night.

Montsalvat Jazz Festival, held at the historic artist's colony in Eltham, brings great food and wonderful, vibrant music to the picturesque surrounds with a fantastic line-up this year that includes Tim Wilson Quarter, MAG Trio, Allen Brown New Orleans Quarter and Flap.

Yarra Valley Open Studios Festival offers a look into the workspaces of more than 45 artists working in a range of mediums including paintings, pottery, jewellery making, photography and more. The program includes an exhibition of all artists involved at Yarra Glen's Sticks Winery.

Group Exhibition: Until September 18
Darebin Music Feast celebrates song writing and music in all its diverse forms with a huge program of events at more than 25 venues. Celebrating Darebin as one of Melbourne's most thriving music communities, many events are free including the High Noon street festival.

Ballarat Foto Biennale, the southern hemisphere's largest photography event, offers a program that showcases the best photography from across Australia and the world with exhibitions of work by artists from China, Poland and other countries, displayed in many venues in Ballarat.

Film Festivals
Lavazza Italian Film Festival, held at selected Palace Cinemas, features new films selected from the recent Venice, Rome and Cannes International Film Festivals. This year the program includes a special retrospective of lassic films from Rome's famous Cinecitta Studios.

Taste of Melbourne, held at Carlton's Royal Exhibition Building, serves up demonstrations by the finest chefs from some of Melbourne's most prestigious and best hatted restaurants. The culinary celebration includes wine tastings, gourmet food showcases and more.

The Spring Graze, held as part of Put Victoria on Your Table, a Victorian Government initiative that celebrates our greatest foods and wines, offers a tasty series of events celebrating the arrival of Spring with more than 60 events held at some of the best restaurants in Victoria.

Flavours of Greece Festival, presented by the Bank of Cyprus, showcases the best in Greek cuisine, celebrating its relevance in Australia's food scene with ticketed events at various restaurants and the highlight of a free Greek Style Coffee Making Competition at Oakleigh's Eaton Mall.

Festivals Your Mother Warned You About
OzKinkFest celebrates the kinkier side of life, bringing excitement from the boudoir to various venues and nightclubs throughout Melbourne. With a program that caters to both the curious and experienced, the festival features special club nights, workshops and more.

Exhibitions - Art | Festival | Show
Max D. Piantoni, featured at Obscura Gallery in St Kilda, presents his series, The Descent of the Dodo: Part One. Using textural materials and photography to reinvent the events leading up to the legendary disappearance of the doomed birds, their aspirations mirror our own desires.

Werribee Mercy Hospital Annual Art Show is a special event that provides a colourful attraction for hospital patients, visitors and employees. Showcasing the artistic talents of the local community, works submitted include oils and acrylics, watercolours, mixed media and photography.

Belonging: Reflections on Place is an exhibition featuring large scale video projections of travel and migration. Showing at Melbourne's Immigration Museum, the installation by video artist Wendy Woodson and designer Kathy Couch features interviews with diverse migrants and refugees.

Fu Hong, a talented artist whose works are featured as part of private collections the world over, will be the focus of an exhibition held at Jenny Pihan Fine Art Gallery in Hampton, displaying the remarkable draftsmanship of this modernist realist's skilfully painted pictures.

Tate Adams, one of Australia's most acclaimed printmakers now in his 80s, has adopted gouache as his favoured medium, leaving behind the intricacies of the woodblock. Exhibiting at Melbourne's RMIT Gallery, the Townsville-based printmaker will showcase a broad spectrum of work.

Tape Melbourne, on display at the Western Terrace of Federation Square, is a temporary work made entirely of packing tape. Created by revolutionary Viennese/Croatian design mavens Numen/For Use, the evolving web like work is an exciting hybrid of art and design.

Space Invaders, held at Melbourne's RMIT Gallery, draws entirely from the National Gallery of Australia's collection for an exhibition that surveys the past 10 years of Australian street art with more than 40 artists featured in displays of over 100 stencils, posters, paste-ups, zines and more.

Dear Father, held at Melbourne's Lord Coconut, is an exhibition of men's jewellery created by various artists. With the inspiration of postcards from Canada, France and other parts across the world, the works reflect the origins of the featured countries each jeweller was given.

Life in Glass, held at Chapel Off Chapel in Prahran, is a new collaborative exhibition from 'The Glass Group', a pioneering team of emerging glass artists. Bringing the medium into a contemporary environment, the artists push the boundaries of glass art and its architectural applications.

The Art of Wildlife showcases Australian flora and fauna, portrayed in both naturalistic and interpretive styles of 2 and 3-dimensional artworks. Presented by The Wildlife Art Society of Australasia, the exhibition at Bundoora Homestead, will aid Wildlife Rescuers in Melbourne's north.

Paintings of Poise and Passion, presented at TarraWarra Museum of Art in Healesville, is an exhibition of works by Sandra Leveson. A critically-acclaimed contributor to abstract painting during the 1970s, Leveson's paintings blend her unique style with misty and turbulent landscapes.

Trafficked - The Reckoning, an inspiring story of a former police officer's quest to find the man who enslaved a young Thai girl in a Sydney brothel, will have be screened at Carlton's Bella Union Theatre. Proceeds will go towards making East Timor's first locally produced feature film.
