Welcome to this week's Melbourne events, exhibitions, sports and community guide for Tuesday to Monday, May 17 to 23.
This week... there's quite a bit of goings on for foodies, with one of Melbourne's best loved pastimes, if not an outright sport, taking the limelight with the Australian Coffee Festival celebrating our vibrant cafe culture. There's also the DMP Harvest Week Festival with a program of events showcasing the best produce and wine of the Daylesford Macedon Ranges.
Cinefiles also get a treat this week with the return of the Message Sticks Indigenous Film Festival offering a program of free screenings. And Melbourne honours one of its most iconic figures, Australia's original diva and grand dame - long before our Edna Everage - Dame Nellie Melba.
Celebrating the 150th birthday this week of the legendary singer, the festival program features concerts, exhibitions and tours where you can learn all sorts of interesting tid-bits, such as the fact that another of Melbourne's icons, Scots Church on Collins Street where Nellie Melba's funeral was held, was in fact built by her father.

150th Birthday Celebrations of Dame Nellie Melba, held during May, sees a wide range of community groups, historical societies and performers come together to host events that recognise the significance of the Richmond born Diva and international star. Events include concerts, exhibitions, tours and more.

Official Celebration Day: Thursday May 19
Nordic Festival, taking place in Warburton, is a celebration of all things Scandinavian with highlights of the festival including traditional a Scandinavian Smorgasbord dinner and the ABBA Dance Party with BABBA performing. There'll also be a Viking Re-enactment Camp, market stalls, cinema and photo exhibitions and more.

United Nations Day of Vesak, held at Melbourne Town Hall, is designed to have a vibrant performance feel, bringing Buddhists from different traditions together to celebrate their diverse cultures. Offering an insight into the rich culture of Buddhism, highlights include the performance of 'Buddha - A mini-Musical'.

Fair Trade Fortnight highlights the plight of disadvantaged workers overseas with a range of events that showcase ethically produced goods including chocolate, coffee and clothing. With exhibitions, shopping tours and more, a highlight of the program is the Fair Trade Festival held at Queen Victoria Market.

Film Festivals
Message Sticks Indigenous Film Festival features a unique selection of free screenings new Indigenous films from both Australia and abroad. Celebrating the depth of Indigenous culture and artists, the opening night will screen 'Here I Am' at RMIT Capital Theatre, with other films presented at ACMI Cinema.

Human Rights Arts and Film Festival features a program of internationally acclaimed films, chosen from more than 700 submissions. Held to spread public awareness of Human Rights issues across the globe, the festival also includes musical performances, art exhibitions, public forums and much more.

Spanish Film Festival, now in its 14th year, offers a fantastic program that features entertaining and beautiful films screening at South Yarra's Palace Cinema Como and Melbourne's Kino Cinema. With a spectacular line-up of 36 films from countries that include Chile and Colombia, genres include drama, comedy, horror and much more.

Food & Wine Festivals
DMP Harvest Week Festival celebrates the best growers, provedores, chefs, restaurateurs and vignerons of the Daylesford Macedon Ranges region. Along with special dinners, farm and winery tours and open cellar days, the festival program includes a great range of fantastic farmers markets.

Australian Coffee Festival, held at the RASV Centre of Melbourne Showgrounds, features a fantastic showcase of Melbourne's favourite indulgence as the cafe capitol of Australia. With a trade only day for those in the cafe industry, there'll also be a day for general public with displays, workshops and more.

Great Trentham Spudfest is a weekend long celebration of the spirit of the community in Trentham and the potatoes harvested in the area. With a large variety of potatoes grown in the area, the festival features cooking events, live music and historical tours of machinery and 'Spudhuts', shacks once used by harvesters.

Music & Arts Festivals
Stonnington Jazz, held at venues that include Chapel Off Chapel and Malvern Town Hall, features performances of the very best jazz this country has to offer. Presenting 100% Australian jazz, the festival features both seasoned musicians and new performers covering the broad spectrum of genres in jazz.

Melbourne Guitar Makers Festival, held at Abbottsford Convent, celebrates handcrafted guitars from some of the best independent luthiers. Exhibiting their finest and latest work to showcase the cutting edge of the craft, it includes performances from some of Melbourne's leading players of classical guitar.

South Eastern Arts Festival, held at the main venue of St Margaret's School in Berwick, is an annual festival-eisteddfod of music performances with sections including piano, vocal, choral, world music and more. The festival also features an exhibition of drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, installation and other media.

Creative Gippsland is a month-long celebration held throughout May that showcases hundreds of events in Gippsland and its neighbouring shires. Highlighting the diverse talent within the area, the program features events that cater to many tastes with exhibitions, workshops, performances and tours.

St Kilda Busking Festival offers a fantastic look at the colourful entertainment that's on offer from Melbourne's best hidden artists. With fun performances held on Sundays between 1pm and 4 pm, the free entertainment offers colourful, bizarre and hilarious entertainment for the whole family.

Public Awareness Events
Education Week held to highlight the services of Victoria's kindergartens and government schools, features a wide range of events including information nights, open days, student displays, performances and free events. It launches with entertainment and music at the Free Family Fun Day held at the State Library of Victoria.

Law Week held each year with events taking place in Melbourne and regional Victoria, offers the public fun and informative ways to engage in their law and legal system. Art Melbourne, Melbourne's Affordable Art Fair, will once again be held at the Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton where there'll be a showcase of over a hundred galleries from around Australia and overseas with thousands of new artworks on display, along with entertainment programs and many of the artists onsite to chat.

Experimenta Utopia Now showcases interactive works with the International Biennial of Media Art tour featuring interactive and screen-based media artworks from countries including Australia, Japan, India, Germany and the UK, with works poking fun at social and physical boundaries of the human race.

Mt Zero: Cabin 1 at the Grampians features the work of five artists who recently spent five days immersed in the North region of the Grampians working en plein-air. On display at Armadale's Firestation Print Studio, the outcome of this expedition captures the incredible beauty and magnificent hues of the Grampians.

Tribes of Tanna, showing at Carbon Black gallery in Prahran, is a wonderful black and white photographic exhibition of tribes located on Tanna Island in Vanuatu. Capturing the beautiful people that living in harmony with their natural environment and the live Volcano on their island, works are available for purchase.

Tamara Dean and Gria Shead will be exhibiting at Collingwood's James Makin Gallery with Tamara's series of works, Only Human, exploring our fragility, vulnerability and intrinsic connection to the natural world. Gria's own series of works, She Is, reveals the sexual and creative power behind Burlesque women.

E.L.K, the acclaimed stencil artist from Canberra, will be holding a solo exhibition at Fitzroy's Brunswick Street Gallery. With growing acclaim both here and overseas, the award-winning artist will exhibit his latest body of his work in startling photorealistic stencil pieces, some of which take up to 200 hours to create.

Fragments of a Universe, presented at Hawthorn's Town Hall Gallery, is an amazing solo exhibition by artist Robyn Emerson. Working with layers of wax and colour in her paintings, Robyn's work reveals various dimensions and surfaces, with many of the works carefully crafted over several months.

Drawn Together by Threads, on show at Stonehouse Gallery in Warrandyte, is an exhibition of collected works by a group of artists drawn together by their love of textiles to also find friendship beyond their work. Colours, patterns and textures are used to create works that display the diversity of textiles.

GATEWAY, an exhibition held at Melbourne Chinese Museum, is the first in a series of contemporary art events in the heritage Chinatown precinct. The exhibition draws inspiration from the gateways of Chinatown which represent a connection between different cultures and announce the presence of the Chinese community.

Relics, this year's exhibition by The Gathering, held at Michaels on Elizabeth Street, showcases works from a passionate group of Australian photographers. Dedicated to using large format cameras, known as bellows, The Gathering meets each year in Trentham East to share their unique photographic passion.

Viewfinder, held at Arts Project Gallery in Northcote, is an exhibition by Alan Constable, an artist who is legally blind with very limited vision, something obliquely referenced within his works. The exhibition showcases more than 60 works selected from Constable's body of work spanning more than 20 years.

Slave Pianos, Punkasila & Pipeline to Oblivion, held at Caulfield's Monash University, are three projects presented by Danius Kesminas, brainchild of some of Australia's most ambitious contemporary art projects, and collaborators who've combined art, music, performance, video, publishing, agit-prop and opera.

Punkasila Forum: Tuesday May 17
Current 10: DUEL, held at the Roslyn Smorgon Gallery of Footscray Community Arts Centre, examines the duel nature of the gap found between objects, situations and their representation. The works by six emerging artists explore innovative practice in photography, video, drawing, sculptural installation and other media.

Tutankhamun, presented by Melbourne Museum, will for the first time in Australia's history see this record-breaking exhibition visit Melbourne for its only Australian stop before the Egyptian treasures, which include Tutankhamun's golden canopic coffinette, are returned to their home in Cairo.

Geelong Property, Wealth & Sustainability Expo, held at the Deakin University Waterfront Campus, is an informative and educational event. Performances & Theatre
HAMLET: A Science-Fiction Rock Spectacular, held at the Union Theatre of Melbourne University, is a quirky reinvention of Shakespeare's classic. Following his father's death, Dr Hamlet becomes obsessed with perfecting a truth serum to derive the true nature of what happened, experimenting on himself and those around him.

No Place Like, written by Chris Summers especially for Union House Theatre at Melbourne University, is a black comedy with moments of tenderness that blends political issues such as street violence and failing state infrastructure with visions of a free-market apocalypse to paint the picture of a discordant Melbourne.

The Haunting of Daniel Gartrell, held at Melbourne venue, fortyfivedownstairs, features John Wood in the title role of a bush poet whose best known work remains unpublished with its final verse. The meaning of the final verse, and the poet himself, is questioned by an actor set to portray Gartrell in an upcoming film.

Fiddler on the Roof, performed at St Kilda's National Theatre, tells the colourful stories of the townspeople of the Russian village of Anatevka. Based on the folk stories of Sholom Aleichem, the iconic musical features well-known show tunes that include Tradition, Matchmaker Matchmaker and the classic If I Were a Rich Man.

It Runs In The Family, performed by Knox Theatre Company, is a classic Ray Cooney comedy in which events begin to spin out of control for Dr David Mortimore when deception and mistaken identities lead to many double-entendres and puns. The high octane comedy plays at Knox Community Arts Centre.

Little Shop of Horrors, performed at Doncaster Playhouse by Phoenix Theatre Company, is one of the longest-running Off-Broadway shows of all time, which also went on to inspire one of the quirkiest film musicals ever as it follows the misadventures of a humble floral assistant led astray by a charismatic carnivorous plant.

The Hatpin, presented by Magnormos with performances held at St Kilda's Theatre Works, is set in Sydney in 1892 and tells the true story of single mother, Amber Murray, whose desperate attempt to save the life of her baby saw her embroiled in one of the most captivating criminal trials in Australian history.

Macbeth, playing for a limited season in the stunning surrounds of Shed 4 at the Docklands, is the latest production by the Australian Shakespeare Company. The epic production is held on a series of installations, drawing audiences deeper in as they follow Macbeth's macabre journey toward self-destruction.

Dusty - The Original Pop Diva, performed by Williamstown Musical Theatre, is a theatrical journey of Dusty's life and career, spanning her early days in 1950s London to through to the new wave of pop in the 1990s. The show features classic songs like Son of a Preacher Man and other greats that made Dusty Springfield's career.

Next To Normal, performed at The Arts Centre, is the Australian Premiere of the emotional musical which won last year's Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The story of a woman lost to herself and her family, it follows her day as she begins making sandwiches and finds she can't stop when lost to frantic compulsion.

The Laramie Project - 10 Years Later is the sequel to one of the most performed plays of the last decade. Performed at St Kilda's Red Stitch Actors Theatre, the documentary style performance features special guests Kim Gyngell, Paul Ashcroft and others as it investigates the ripple effect of a single, senseless murder.

Doctor Zhivago, the classic masterpiece which has become an outstanding musical, will be appearing at performed at Her Majesty's Theatre. In The Next Room or the vibrator play, performed by Melbourne Theatre Company in Southbank, is Sarah Ruhl's comedy about a doctor's modern method for treating hysteria and the intrigue it raises with his wife when she realises the sexual benefits that come with the treatment might do well for women in general.

ROCK OF AGES, held at Melbourne's Comedy Theatre, is a hilarious, feel-good love story set in 1987 when a small-town girl meets a big-city dreamer in L.A.'s most legendary rock club. Classical, Choral & Recitals
King Arthur, performed by Melbourne University Choral Society, is lively and dramatic semi-opera inspired by the exploits of the Britons and Saxon. Held at Federation Square's BMW Edge, the semi-opera in five parts also features the Catholic University Choir and players from Royal Melbourne Philharmonic.

Burlesque, Cabaret & Dance
The Divine Miss Bette, performed by Catherine Alcorn at the Butterfly Club in South Melbourne, is a chance to become acquainted with one of the greatest cabaret artists of our time. Bawdy, brash and just as glamorous as the original, Catherine Alcorn delivers Bette Midler's most loved songs flawlessly.

My Life in the Musicals, held at Darebin Arts & Entertainment Centre in Preston, features John Bowles as he returns with a popular selection of songs from the musicals in which he has starred including 'Hello Dolly,"Phantom of the Opera,"A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,"Guys and Dolls,' and more.

FLAGRANTI Italian Variety LBGTIQ Dance is an annual event presented by ArciLesbica Australia. Term Four, newcomers in the Metal and Hardcore scene, will be performing at the Brunswick Hotel. Free to attend, the bill for the evening includes other new and upcoming bands with Term Four, formerly named Legacy, supported by Free World, Fear for thought, Vengeance Behold and Cradle in the Crater.

Damian Howard, the creative force and lead singer and songwriter with the popular Celtic Rock Band The Ploughboys, will be performing at the Old Cheese Factory in Berwick. Jetty Road, winners of last year's CMAA Golden Guitar award for Best Group, will be appearing at Melbourne's Spensers LIVE. Pigeon John, a rapper whose unique style has found appeal across a wide audience, will be performing at the East Brunswick Club. Having worked with groups such as L.A. He Says/She Says, featuring Daniel Burt and Aleisha McCormack who met as writers on The 7PM Project, is a performance in their own words as Daniel battles it out with know alls and Aleisha tackles repressed memories of school billeting and deciphering her grandfather's Christmas letters. It's held in South Melbourne.

Egypt 3D: Secrets of the Mummies, screening at IMAX Cinema, explores the mysterious world of ancient Egypt. Offering a taste of the wonders held in the upcoming exhibition, Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs, the film re-enacts the discovery of a cache of forty mummies.
