Welcome to this week's Melbourne events, exhibitions, sports and community guide for the week running from Tuesday September 1 - Monday September 7, 2009.
This week.. Festivals abound in all their arty glory with the ever popular Darebin Music Feast offering an enormous program of performances and events, the Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival with exhibitions, open gardens and more, and the Brimbank Literary Festival presenting a range of events for people of all ages.
There's also more of the yartz yet with the Overload Poetry Festival as poets go head to verbose head in slamming competitions in Melbourne, while in Ballarat there's the Foto Biennale showcasing some of the finest photography from here and overseas. There's also the Greek Film Festival, Melbourne Spring Fashion Week and much more.

The Yarra Valley Group Exhibition features the work of fifty-three artists who will be opening their studios to the public in the upcoming Yarra Valley Open Studios Weekend. Held at Sticks Winery in Yarra Glen, the exhibition is a taste of the talent you'll be able to get a closer look at during the special weekend.

Open Studios Weekend Held September 18 to 20
The Arlen Ness Photographic Exhibition, presented by Victory Motorcycles, is a collection of work by Arlen Ness, the world's foremost motorcycle customiser who has been creating motorcycle art since the 1960's. The exhibition is held at Sebel Heritage Hotel Yarra Valley in Chirnside Park.
When: September 5 to 13
The Spirit of the Black Dress Exhibition, part of Melbourne Spring Fashion Week, showcases the works of emerging fashion and textile designers who were invited to create their own interpretation of a contemporary black dress. Judged by industry experts, the results are displayed at Georges on Collins.
When: September 1 to 6 - 10am to 8pm
The Extra Ordinary Exhibition, held to celebrate the release of Sigma's DP2 camera, features the work of fifteen well-known Australian photographers who were chosen to capture everyday ordinary objects that they find extraordinary. With limited prints available for purchase, it's held at Guildford Lane Gallery.

The New Scientist Eureka Prize Exhibition is a stunning display of imagery that showcases the best twenty-five entries in the annual Science Photography competition, sponsored by New Scientist. Held at RMIT Gallery in Swanston Street, impressive photos include blastwaves and malaria-infected blood cells.
When: Runs Until September 12 - Mondays to Saturdays
The Revolution in Colour is an exhibition by Brendan Parkes, held at the gallery 69 Smith Street in Collingwood. Named after a misread book cover, works in the exhibition capture as much of a statement within their titles as they do with the artwork itself captured in shades of shocking pink and fluorescent green.

Between the Lines is the 5th Annual Artist Books Exhibition by Artisan Books in Fitzroy. With a given theme inspiring works for each exhibition, this year's theme of 'Between the Lines' has attracted an amazing collection of works redefining the boundaries of books, raising them to sculptural form.

From East to West by Liu Xiao Xian, a contemporary Chinese Australian artist, is an exhibition at Melbourne's RMIT Gallery that explores the nuances between East and West. With playful wit, his photographs and sculptures explore his experiences since leaving China after the Tiananmen Square Massacre.
When: Runs Until September 12 - Monday to Saturday
SUB12 is a Hobsons Bay arts event that features over 40 artists and 34 exhibitions held across 12 weeks in one great space, The Substation, which is located in Newport. Presented in four distinct exhibition blocks, each with its own opening night, the shows feature a diverse mix of emerging and established artists.

Open Days, Expos & Launches
Miss Green's Garden Party, held at The Willows as part of Melbourne Spring Fashion Week, is a fashion event where local established and emerging designers will showcase outfits created using only eco-friendly materials. Many pieces will be auctioned off with 50% of the purchase price donated to charity.
When: Sunday September 6
L'Art et la mode - L'Art c'est la mode is an exhibition held at Melbourne's Madam Virtue & Co, showcasing their upcoming Haute Couture and Pret-�-Porter Collection alongside artwork by Archibald Prize Finalist Mike Chavez, Melbourne-based jeweller Katie Scott and fashion photographer Andrew Maccoll.
When: September 1 to 22
CityGT Worldwide Launch - CityGT, a brand new driving game that will be available for download on the iPhone, will have its Worldwide Launch at Federation Square where there will be a huge interactive tent where people can hook up their iPhone and test their driving skills on the big TV screen.

The National 4X4, Fishing Show & Outdoors Expo, held at the Melbourne Showgrounds this year, offers a bigger venue and a bigger showcase of everything fans of touring, camping and fishing could want. The expo offers the latest innovations, product launches and seminars hosted by industry experts.
When: Friday September 4 to Sunday September 6
The Peninsula Craft Expo, held at the Mornington Peninsula Community Theatre, showcases suppliers of a range of interests including quilt making, beading, scrapbooking and other hobbies such as embroidery. With stallholders of many other art interests, it's presented by the Rotary Club of Dromana.
When: Saturday & Sunday, September 5 & 6
Melbourne City School, located on the corner of King and Little Collins Streets, will be holding a series of Open Days to showcase the school's educational vision with Drop-in Sessions during which the public can explore the campus, meet staff and learn more about their fresh approach to education.
When: Wednesday September 2 - 1pm to 3pm
Performances & Theatre
The Kids Are Alright, presented by Little Ones Theatre, explores post-apocalyptic adolescence in a world where sexual enlightenment and the fate of the stars are held by youths driven by survival. Told in two epic parts, the adrenaline fuelled fantasia runs for a limited time at Northcote Town hall.
When: Tuesday September 1 to Sunday September 6
Once We Lived Here, performed at Flinders Lane's Forty Five Downstairs, is a new Australian musical by Dean Bryant and Mathew Frank. The play examines the passing of a way of life in rural Northern Victoria during a family gathering at a sheep station when hard truths are exposed.
When: September 2 to 20 | Tuesdays to Sundays
Off the Hook, presented by Eltham Little Theatre, is a comedy of errors set in the lounge bar of Hook House, a quiet hotel in the English countryside where an assortment of guests, including an escaped prisoner, create mayhem that becomes classic farce. Performances are held at Eltham Performing Arts Centre.
When: September 3 to 19 | Thursdays to Saturdays
Sunday Matinee Held September 13
An Evening of Inspiration is a cabaret style night at the O'Keefe Hall in Avondale Heights, hosted by Tracy Bartram. Featuring an array of professional vocalists including David Muscat and Joanne Paladino, proceeds help support not for profit theatre group, St Martin's In The Heights Productions.
When: Friday September 4 - 7pm | Bookings Required
The Colours, performed by Peter Houghton at Melbourne Theatre Company's Lawler Studio in Southbank, follows the comic story of Sergeant Atkins, a man who plans of his own when he's required to disband the British colony of Batundi in 1946, giving up the flag and its colours that he guards.
When: Runs Until September 12
Death and the King's Horseman, performed at South Yarra's Cromwell Road Theatre, is based on the true story by Nigerian playwright, Wole Soyinka. Portraying a 1946 incident in Nigeria when British intervention during a funeral ritual led to tragedy, the play is co-produced with the HOPE Sudanese theatre group.
When: September 3, 4 & 5
God of Carnage, featuring Pamela Rabe and Hugo Weaving, is a play by Tony Award winner, Yasmina Reza, a French playwright whose corrosive wit examines the darker sides of human nature as a playground scuffle escalates when the parents of those involved enter the fray with good intentions.
When: Runs Until October3 - Mondays to Saturdays
Chicago, appearing at Her Majesty's Theatre, is one of the true greats in Broadway history that tells the tale of Roxie Hart, a nightclub dancer with dreams of stardom who kills her lover and goes to prison. Featuring Sharon Millerchip as Roxie, other stars include Caroline O'Connor, Craig McLaughlin and Gina Riley.

Rockabye, performed by Melbourne Theatre Company at their Sumner Theatre in Southbank, is a play that examines our self-involved, celebrity-obsessed culture. Written by Joanna Murray-Smith, the play follows Sidney, a pop star who struggles to find success with her career and life after turning forty.
When: Runs Until September 20
Jersey Boys, performed at the Princess Theatre, is the Broadway hit that charts the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons as the play takes a nostalgic look at how four blue-collar kids became one of the greatest successes in pop music history while showcasing the songs they became famous for.

Classical, Choral & Recitals
Rumor, performed at the Italian Institute of Culture in South Yarra, is a memorable performance that recaptures the history of Italian theatre in the thirties as Rome's tradition of 'penne all'arrabbiata' is relived and 'danced' with a modern slant in this rare performance that comes with a glass of vino.
When: Wednesday September 2 - 7pm
Dance
Concord, presented by The Australian Ballet, is a performance that combines the talents of three of the most exciting choreographers in ballet today from Russia, England and Spain. With dance works by Alexei Ratmansky, Wayne McGregor, and Nacho Duato, performances are held at the Arts Centre.
When: Ends Tuesday September 1
Flamenco at the Glasshouse is an evening of entertainment from Melbourne's finest flamenco artists, Fiebre Flamenca and Valentino Flamenco Ensemble. Bringing the highest standard of flamenco music and dance to the stage, accomplished musicians and dancers will present a uniquely dynamic show.

Live Concerts & Gigs
Footsteps of a Nobody, performed at Lalor Living and Learning Centre, is the very first rock-musical by Donna Williams and The Aspinauts. Half play, half musical, the performance traces the developmental milestones portrayed in Donna's bestselling book, Nobody Nowhere; Autobiography of an Autistic Girl.
When: Thursday September 3, 7pm to 8pm
Twilight at the Terrace, a monthly event at the Royal Botanic Garden's Terrace tearoom, showcases the best performers of jazz, folk, classical and comedy. With exquisite views and food, they'll be presenting a performance by Andrew MacGregor, master of the Shakuhachi, a traditional Japanese flute.
When: Thursday September 3 - 6.30pm
The Flip Out Festival and Record Fair, held at the Corner Hotel in Richmond, is a huge day of entertainment with a record fair, a mega merch market, a BBQ and loads of other surprises along with live music held across two stages with bands including Naked On The Vague, The Native Cats and more.

Hey Gringo will be appearing at Evelyn County Estate Winery near Eltham, where the group will perform their fun tongue in cheek fusion of groove, blues, jazz, soul and roots music. Offering a cruisy afternoon of music and great views, food and wine at the winery, the performance is free to attend.
When: Sunday September 6 - 3pm to 6pm | FREE Event
Visible Sessions Live, presented by Multicultural Arts Victoria, is a series of performances that unites musicians in jam sessions that combine Aussie sounds with influences from around the world. Held at Black Box at the Arts Centre, the fourth session features Jess Harlen Band and Brown Roots Collective.

Burlesque & Cabaret
Theatrical Mayhem, held each week at the Australian Centre Of Performing Arts' Cabaret Voltaire in North Melbourne, is a live entertainment phenomenon that captures the passionate revival of burlesque with performances by emerging talents that are sensual, sexy, confronting and often totally mesmerizing.
When: Every Thursday Night - Starts 8pm
Friday Night Burlesque, held at Fitzroy's Burlesque Bar, is a scintillating night of live performance, capturing the long and varied history of Burlesque entertainment in all its cheeky, saucy glory featuring established acts as well as some of the hottest up and coming performers in the Burlesque scene.

Curly Girl Burlesque at North Melbourne's Cabaret Voltaire is a fun, cheeky and risque show, which began as an Hours Level research project by Claire Haywood, and has since gone on to become a hit that celebrates the burlesque of yesteryear with a contemporary touch that challenges perceptions of women.
