Major Events Guide
Hume Winter Music Festival, now in its 5th year, is bigger than ever with a diverse program of events that are suited for people of all tastes. A mixture of food, culture and music, the festival begins this Friday and runs until Sunday 3 August. Bringing together different cultures with performances and special attractions, the festival features a performance by the Dinicu Chamber Orchestra at the historic Westmeadows Hall.
NAIDOC Week, takes place between July 6 and 13, offering a large program of events that will run throughout Melbourne and regional cities of Victoria.
Held by the National Aboriginal Islander Day Observance Committee, the weeklong event includes Indigenous ceremonies, art exhibitions, family fun days, performances and much more.
Days in the Dioceses is a week in Melbourne that will see an array of events taking place that will inspire and engage a series of concerts, art exhibitions, and festive days held at local parishes, schools, and communities throughout the city of Melbourne. Running from July 10 to 14, Days in the Dioceses celebrates the week leading up to WYD 2008 in Sydney when Pope Benedict XVI visits Australia.
Peace By Piece, an Inter-Faith Peace Ceremony that will be held at Federation Square on July 10th, will feature a performance by 2007's Australian Idol Winner, Natalie Gauci. At 10am on the special day there will be a dove release to celebrate young people and their many different faiths, along with an Aboriginal smoking ceremony and symbols and sounds of many religions, bringing Federation Square to life.
Bridging Communities Festival, held by the Merri Creek Management Committee, is a special festival and planting day at Rotunda Wetland in Clifton Hill.
Taking place on Sunday July 13, you can enjoy friendly company as you plant a bridge for wildlife. A barbecue will be held on the day and there will be activities, displays and entertainment provided by The Connies.
Exhibitions - Art | Festival | Show
On the Bowery is an exhibition of installation, photography and paintings that reflect the impressions of three artists who shared a loft on The Bowery, a culturally diverse area of New York. The group show is held at St Kilda's Alliance Francaise Gallery.
RMIT Gallery is exhibiting recent drawings by Klaus Rinke, a German artist whose work explores themes of space, time and water as metaphors for mortality. An artist of high regard, his organic forms were inspired by his first Australian visit in the late '70s.
I Don't Belong Here But There is the first solo exhibition of Shiau-Peng Chen, commemorating the artist's first year in Melbourne. With paintings and text based artworks that relate her experiences, the show runs at Melbourne gallery, Apartment until July 27.
Senoritas, an exhibition on new work by Aida Sabic, will be showing at Collingwood gallery, Per Square Metre. Progressing from previous work that was portrait based, Aida has created beautiful and expressive characters. The show runs until July 13.
Helbourne is an exhibition of text and image that tells a narrative of five people who are thrust together by unseen currents of coincidence over one winter evening. Set within select bars, cafes and retail stores of Melbourne, the exhibition ends July 13.
Melbourne-SCAPES, an exhibition currently running at Obscura Gallery in St Kilda, combines the work of five photographers and their unique visions of Melbourne. Photos included feature iconic lane-ways, the Docklands precinct and other aspects of Melbourne.
Darwin with Tears celebrates Lyndal Jones' successful career at the forefront of Australian video and performance art. Showing at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, it includes work that represented Australia at the 2001 Venice Biennale.
Expos
Fun in Retirement Expo - Retirees and those nearing retirement can enjoy the Fun in Retirement Expo this week, held at the Boroondara Sports Complex from Saturday. Presented by North Balwyn's Rotary Club, the expo continues this Monday, featuring many individual exhibitors displaying a wide range of products and services of interest to local residents in, or nearing, retirement. Entry is only $2 to the event.
Melbourne Winter Boat Show continues this Monday at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. With displays from the best in the marine business, the show offers something for enthusiasts of many water sports including skiing, fishing, cruising and more.
Arts & Theatre
Miracleman is a two man show that is based on the work of Alan Moore, one of the most celebrated comic writers. Playing at the Croft Institute, the performance follows the journey of a man struggling to make sense of the superhero who haunts his childhood dreams.
Interviews with Famous People sees actors Melanie Sharp and Darren Lever use various theatrical methods to recreate celebrity interviews. Blurring the lines between the lives and thoughts of the famous and the ordinary, the show runs at Carlton's La Mama.
The Thing About Men is a moving but light-hearted musical comedy from the writers of the successful play, I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change. A story of infidelity and the complications it brings, the show runs until Saturday at St Kilda's Theatreworks.
Wicked, based on Gregory Maguire's novel, is the hit musical that tells the untold story of the legendary witches from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Now playing at the Regent Theatre, the show reveals the surprising past of the supposedly Wicked Witch.
Scarlett O'Hara at the Crimson Parrot, written by David Williamson, tells the story of Scarlett, a woman whose imagination helps her escape a job that is all too dull. Starring Caroline O'Connor in the title role, the whimsical play runs till July 12 at the Arts Centre.
Concert Performances
The Red Tree, an atmospheric performance by the Australian Chamber Orchestra, is inspired by the work of author and artist Shaun Tan. Featuring Tan's imagery and music by the ACO and Gondwana Voices, it will be performed Sunday and next Monday only.
Diamond Valley Singers are currently presenting their new performance, Kismet at Warrandyte High School Theatre. With shows running until July 12, Kismet features classic Broadway songs. Proceeds will go to World Vision and Open House.
Classic Kids at the Zoo is a series of special performances held by Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at Melbourne Zoo. Performing at the Zoo Pavilion on Wednesday and Thursday, the concerts are free with admission, but booking is advised.
Entertainment & Nightlife
The Next Generation Concert, held as part of Days in the Diocese, will take place on Thursday at Federation Square at 5pm. Presented by the St Vincent de Paul Society, the free event includes entertainment by One Fire Dance, Gary Pinto and the Brolga Boys.
Me and the Grownups will be playing at Manchester Lane this Thursday, performing their blend of Classical-Folk-Pop. Gaining much praise for their unique sound, the performance is held to celebrate the release of their debut album by renowned distributor Planet/MGM.
Cinema
Reel Anime 2008, presented by Madman Cinema, showcases 4 of the freshest and most exciting anime feature films this side of Tokyo. The program includes the stunning Batman: Gotham Knight, and the beautiful storytelling of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.
West Side Shorts, presented by Angry Productions, is a monthly film night held at the Junction Hotel in Newport. Held every second Tuesday of the month, the film nights are a chance to see short films and also network with local filmmakers. Entry is only $2.
Live Comedy
Not Quite Right is the latest performance by ABC Radio host and Melbourne comedian, Toby Sullivan. Exploring life with his husband, the fact that Toby's approaching a rather balding 40, and how he came to be in Sydney for a day, the show will run at Trades Hall until July 12.
The Quanzhou Marionette Troupe, one of China's great cultural treasures, will be visiting Australia for a limited performance season at the Chinese Museum, showcasing Chinese marionette history dating back 2,000 years. Running from June 28 to July 4, master puppeteers will beautiful puppets creating lifelike portrayals of men and women, spirits and wild animals in the stunning traditional shows.
Luna Freeze - Luna Park will be making the most of the winter months with Melbourne's newest ice skating venue, held in the middle of Luna Park's Winter Wonderland. With ice-skating set to cool tunes and all under dazzling lights, Luna Freeze runs until October.
Circus Shows
Circus Oz, Melbourne's very own international stars, are celebrating 30 years with a high-energy spectacular that thrives with colour, comedy and breathtaking feats designed to excite audiences of all ages. Pushing the boundaries of conventional circus their show blends imagery, contemporary music and comedy with a live band. They will be performing at Birrarung Marr with shows running until July 13.

One of Victoria's (and the world) more obscure sports is Trugo, invented in the railway workshops of Newport in the western suburbs by railway workers in the 1920's and still played to this day.
Played outdoors on a green similar to that used for Lawn Bowls (90 feet in length for men, 70 feet for women), the objective of the game is to score goals or points by striking a rubber ring (wheel) with a mallet though a pair of goal posts.
