This week, the RSPCA offers a fun day for your furry friends with the Million Paws Walk, the Next Wave Festival celebrates all things arty, and the Buddha's Day and Multicultural Festival takes place Fed Square. There's also spicy cinema action with the Spanish Film Festival, Law Week with many free events, the continuing Moonee Valley Arts Week, and for the kids there's a day of fun as Melbourne Skydeck celebrates its first birthday.

Major Events Guide
RSPCA Million Paws Walk
The Annual Million Paws Walk will be held this Sunday at Albert Park Lake, along with 13 locations around regional Victoria. Raising funds for the RSPCA, The Million Paws Walk is gaining momentum each year, with record crowds of dogs and owners joining the event. Online registrations are now closed, but you can still come along and register on the day.
Next Wave Festival, this year carrying the theme 'Closer Together,' presents two remarkable weeks of genre-busting new works across Melbourne, featuring work from over 400 young and emerging artists from around Australia. With many events free to the public, the festival sees art and performance projects appearing throughout Melbourne's galleries, theatres and bars, and even footpaths, billboards, and more.
Melbourne Skydeck, the only observation deck in the world that can thrill you with 'The Edge,' celebrates its 1st Birthday this Saturday with a special day of activities. With free entry for children under 16, on the day there'll be Face Painting, Clowns, Giveaways, Prizes, Cake and Heaps of Entertainment for the whole family. Special Guests at the celebration include Bob the Builder, Freddo Frog and Paddle Pop Lion.
The Spanish Film Festival celebrates its 11th year in 2008 with another season of award-winning, entertaining, provocative and beautiful films screening at Palace Cinema Como and Palace Westgarth.
This year's selection provides a vibrant overview of today's Spanish film production with feature films, documentaries, short films and special events.
Law Week, held in the 3rd week of May each year, promotes access and understanding of our law and justice system. An opportunity for the community to learn about the law and for lawyers to become more involved in their communities, Law Week features many free events, inviting discovery of the rich culture of our law and justice system and celebrating the vital role it plays in our society.
Moonee Valley Arts Week, running in Moonee Ponds till May 22, explores the four elements of earth, fire, wind and water with a program of performances featuring dance, song, installations, exhibitions and workshops. Highlights include the Words on Wheels Project using vehicles to display words as art, and aRtECYCLE, an outdoor exhibition of sculptures made of or inspired by recycled materials.
Upcoming Events
Come-in, now showing at RMIT Gallery, is an exhibition of work from 25 young German artists. Using the relationship between fine art and applied design, the artists explore what binds and separates us in our interior and exterior environments.
The World Pinhole Photography Day Exhibition, presented by PhotoSpace Gallery in Collingwood, features images that provide a different perspective. With images that offer an almost infinite depth-of-field, the exhibition runs until May 24.
5X5, now showing at East Melbourne's Chrysalis Gallery, is an exhibition that presents five recent works each by five artists. A vibrant collection, the works demonstrate each artists strong engagement with their chosen mediums.
Black in Fashion: Mourning to Night, an exhibition running at both NGV International and NGV Australia, explores the impact and influences that black has had within many facets of clothing, tracing the changing significance of black in Western fashion.
The Melbourne Story lets you explore Melbourne's history, learning about the unique evolvement in this latest exhibition at Melbourne Museum. With evocative stories, icons and personalities that have shaped Melbourne, the exhibition features over 1200 objects.
Top Designs, on display at Melbourne Museum, is an exhibition that showcases some of last year's outstanding VCE student designs including an electric rockabilly guitar, decadent denim inspired by Marie Antoinette, and even a remote-controlled helicopter!
The Fitzgibbons Dynasty is an exhibition that honours the Fitzgibbons, one of Australia's most prominent families in entertainment. On show at the Victorian Jazz Archive, the exhibition features three generations including late jazz icon, Graham "Smacka"Fitzgibbon.
Expos
The Building & Home Improvement Expo returns to the Exhibition Centre this week, running from Friday to Sunday. With demonstrations and seminars, the event offers a chance to source building related materials and products in a relaxed environment.
The National Careers & Employment Expo, held this Friday and Saturday at the Exhibition Centre, provides an opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds to learn more about Australia's leading educational and training providers. Entry is free.
Arts & Theatre
The Australian String Quartet begin their eagerly anticipated second national tour this month, featuring a first-time joint appearance with special guest artist, harpist Marshall McGuire. They will be performing this Wednesday at Collins Street Baptist Church.
Wanderlands, beginning Wednesday at South Yarra's Randall Theatre, is a play from award-winning dramatist Nic Velissaris that tells a tale of survival and adventure involving a group of young outcasts, played by members of St Martins Youth Arts Centre.
Kiss Me Kate, Cole Porter's well-known and cheeky musical take on Shakespeare's 'The Taming of the Shrew' will be playing this week at Ringwood's Karralyka Theatre. Featuring a full orchestra, performances will be held from Friday till Sunday.
Sweeney Todd - Beginning with a special preview performance on Friday, Throwback Players will be presenting the popular musical, Sweeney Todd at the University of Melbourne's Union House Theatre. Laced with dark humour, it will run until May 24.
Thoroughly Modern Millie, based on the popular 1967 movie, is the latest production of the Catchment Players. Set in the roaring twenties the zany musical that took Broadway by storm begins Friday at the Darebin Arts & Entertainment Centre in Preston.
The Boy from Oz, presented by CLOC Musical Theatre, tells the funny and heart-breaking story of the extraordinary life of Peter Allen. The show features lavish costumes, high-kicking dance routines and many of the much-loved songs Peter Allen was famous for.
The Wedding Singer - A New Musical is the latest production of Williamstown Musical Theatre Company. Based on the popular film, and with an all-new score that pays loving homage to the pop songs of the 80's, the play runs at Williamstown Mechanics Institute.
Melba Conservatorium will be holding a performance on Wednesday, with Melba Magic - Melba's very own vocalists - performing at 1:10pm. The performance is held as part of the Lunchtime Concert series in Richmond. Admission is free.
Guys And Dolls, playing at Princess Theatre, features a sensational cast that includes Lisa McCune, Garry McDonald, Shane Jacobson and Magda Szubanski. Set during 1940's New York, the must-see musical is one of Broadway's greatest shows!
Entertainment & Nightlife
Global Night Shift - This Friday at Waterfront City, join the movement as Australia stands up to end child slavery. The Global Night Shift is one national event held simultaneously in six cities. The dance party is a chance to have fun and hear about the cause from passionate speakers. Musicians performing on the night include Evermore and The Hampdens. All profits raised will go to The Oaktree Foundation.
West Side Shorts, presented by Angry Productions, is a monthly film night held at the Junction Hotel in Newport. Held every second Tuesday of the month, the film nights are a chance to see short films and also network with local filmmakers. Entry is only $2.
The Red Cross Gala Ball, held Saturday at Crown Towers' Palladium Ballroom, offers a Night of Latin Rhythm this year with an evening spectacular of dancing and entertainment. The fun and entertaining event will raise funds for emergency services.

Community
Science Issues Cafe is a monthly discussion group that allows lay people to get together and discuss the big issues in science today. Held at Princes Hill Community Centre, this Monday Lawrence Cavedon discusses Artificial Intelligence.
The Business Chicks Breakfast, held this Friday at Federation Square's ZINC, features a talk by Detective Inspector Peter Baines, one of Australia's most experienced disaster management specialists. All profits from the event are donated to Kids Helpline.
Melbourne Social Group will be holding their Birthday Bash at Baroq House this Friday. A free event hosted by the group's the Fun, Food and Friendship team, the night is a chance to meet new people and have a fun night out in one of Melbourne's finest bars.
Learn to Knit at Prahran Library - Every Wednesday at Prahran Library there is a free one-hour knitting class for people of all ages and experience. A great way to make friends and be creative, the classes begin at 1:30pm - needles and wool can be provided.

As Much Class As Glass
The National Gallery of Victoria has the world's largest stained glass ceiling, measuring 51 metres long by 15 metres wide.
The famous ceiling was created by Leonard French, who is also known for the equally beautiful stained glass circular window in Monash University's Robert Blackwood Concert Hall.
An accomplished Melbourne artist, since 1949 French has held over 40 solo exhibitions in Australia and was honoured with an OBE in 1969.
