Forum Melbourne

Forum Melbourne

Situated in the heart of Melbourne's CBD on Flinders Street, the Forum Theatre with its unique Gothic-Romanesque architecture, is the place-to-be for live performances of various artists, both local and international.

The Forum Theatre's exterior has an exotic design that continues as you step through the doors. Lavish moulded plaster, gold paint and reproduction casts of famous Greek and Italian sculptures line an auditorium interior topped with a soaring blue ceiling punched with stars designed to look like an open sky.

Formerly the State Theatre, the Forum Theatre opened in 1929 with the largest seating capacity of any theatre in Australia.

The Forum hosts cabaret, rock concerts and the annual Melbourne Film Festival.

The Forum Melbourne has undergone interior restoration and refurbishment (2023), with additonal work required on the exterior.

While Heritage Victoria is within its rights to investigate and report on buildings, it needs to be realistic. Without the Marriner Group, the building would be sold for its land and bulldozed. Heritage overlays are not going to save a building if no-one wants to buy it. Companies like Conservation Studio may subscribe to the conservation of buildings but have a vested interest.

We are very lucky to have the Marriner Group!

The Forum Theatre is an over 18's venue. Patrons must be able to present one of the following ID's to gain entry: learner or driver's license, passport, proof of age card, keypass. No ID, No Entry, No Refunds.

Alcohol, cans, bottles, recording equipment, lasers, studded belts or weapons cannot be brought onto the premises.

The Flinders Street entrance has one small step up to a line of double doors. A ramp is positioned here during performances. The entrance opens on to the foyer. The Box Office is situated to the right of the entrance doors. Two large railed staircases line the walls and lead to an upstairs foyer containing a bar and refreshment area.

Forum I: Main Auditorium
The large auditorium on the ground floor has been remodelled into a cabaret style venue, seating 800 (cabaret style), and standing 1500 (concert style). There are flat entrances from the foyer to Forum I. A sloped floor leads to seating in booths and tables. For most seating, one or two steps must be scaled. Forum I also has a licensed bar. Enquiries regarding wheelchair access should be directed to the Box Office.

Forum II: Upstairs Auditorium
An intimate space seating 540-590 patrons. Access from Flinders Street is via the large railed staircases to the left and right of the foyer. Alternative access is via the side entrance in Russell Street. Again, there is a large staircase. The Auditorium is quite steeply raked and has no handrails.

Toilets are situated at the rear of the Forum I, near the Russell Street exit, and also in the upstairs foyer next to the bar.

A unisex accessible toilet is situated at the rear of Forum I, near the Russell Street exit.
