2013 Supplements Scandal

The biggest story in AFL history saw an investigation into Essendon players being given a range of supplements to improve performance and increase recovery times duing 2011-2012. It was deemed the program was poorly managed and monitored due to a lack of care by Essendon officials and coaching staff. In August 2013, the AFL commission handed down the harshest penalty in its history.

The Essendon Football Club was fined $2m. The coach James Hird was suspended for 12 months. Other officials were fined. Essendon Football Club lost its 2013 premiership points and demoted to 9th position.
