History of Hoyts

At the turn of the century, Dr Arthur Russell, a Melbourne dentist with a yearning for show business gave birth to a corporation that would become a world force in entertainment.

Dr Russell was, in his spare time, a cornet player and a fairly accomplished magician. To satisfy his theatrical urges he bought a share in a small American travelling circus and toured with them around Melbourne as their resident magician. Hoyts Circus, as it was known, unfortunately had a financially disastrous run and Russell returned reluctantly to dentistry.

With his appetite for show business thoroughly whetted he leased the old St Georges Hall in Bourke Street and started showing programs of short pictures on Saturday nights. As his new venture was quite a success Dr Russell formed a company which he called Hoyts Pictures Pty. Ltd. By the time Dr Russell died at the end of World War I, the company had expanded into the Melbourne suburbs as well as to Sydney.

In 1926 a merger took place between the interest of Hoyts Pictures Pty. Ltd., Electric Theatres Pty. Ltd. and Associated Theatres Pty. Ltd. The new entity became know as Hoyts Theatres Limited and the name Hoyts has been associated with every successful innovation in the exhibition industry since. By 1932 the Fox Film Corporation (now Twentieth Century Fox) had secured a major shareholding in the company.

Five decades later, in August 1982, Twentieth Century Fox sold Hoyts to a group of four Melbourne businessmen. In April 1985 the Fink family, long associated with cinema entertainment in Australia, purchased the interests of the other partners to become the sole owner.

The takeover of Hoyts by the Fink family heralded a new and dynamic phase for the corporation, unshackling creative, imaginative and economic forces that had been previously unseen inside the traditional industry of film exhibition.

In addition to the diversification of the companies interests the last fifteen years have seen unprecedented development and investment by Hoyts in its original charter, cinema exhibition across Australia, New Zealand, USA and South America, Hoyts has created an extraordinary circuit of new cinema complexes.

In 2000 Hoyts cinemas was bought by the Packer family owned Consolidated Press Holdings (CPH) who saw a return to the Australian roots of the company, selling interests in the UK and USA. After unprecedented expansion during the 90’s, this allowed Hoyts to concentrate solely on providing it’s Australian and New Zealand patrons with quality and service. In January 2005 Western Australian Newspapers Holdings Limited (WAN) and Publishing and Broadcasting limited (PBL) took over ownership of Hoyts forming a 50-50 joint venture. The new ownership brings renewed commitment to driving growth and keeping Hoyts Australia's leading cinema exhibitor.

Hoyts now operates over 350 screens in the oceanic region solidifying its place in the ‘big 3’ of major films exhibition companies in the area. With showcase cinemas at Fox Studios and Chatswood in Sydney, Chadstone in Melbourne and Carousel in Perth, Hoyts continue setting the standard in cinema excellence.
