Bridges in Melbourne

Melbourne has many bridges crossing the Yarra River from the West Gate Bridge at the mouth of the river out into the suburbs.

West Gate Bridge

The West Gate Bridge is a large cable-stayed bridge that spans the Yarra River, just north of its mouth into Port Phillip, and is a vital link between the inner city and the west of Melbourne.

It is the second longest in Australia, and is twice as long as the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Thirty-five construction workers were killed when the bridge collapsed during construction on 15 October 1970.

Bolte Bridge

The Bolte Bridge is a large twin cantilever bridge that spans the Yarra River and Victoria Harbour in the Docklands precinct to the west of the Melbourne CBD.

Webb Bridge

Webb Bridge is a pedestrian crossing from Docklands Park to Dockland residential apartments.

Charles Grimes Bridge

Named after Charles Grimes, who captained the 1802 expedition up the Yarra River with James Fleming.

Seafarers Bridge
Melbourne's newest bridge (2009) Seafarers Bridge at South Wharf links the north and south sides of the Yarra River near the Melbourne Recital Centre and Convention Centre.

Spencer Street Bridge

Not Melbourne's prettiest bridge, Spencer Street Bridge connects Spencer St with Southbank and Clarendon S, South Melbourne.

Kings Bridge

Links King St, Melbourne with Kings Way down to Albert Park. Crown Casino complex was built over part of the bridge and road.

Queens Bridge

Crosses where Yarra Falls originally separated fresh and sea water. It is also where John Batman's only son tragically drowned while fishing.

Sandridge Bridge

The Sandridge Bridge is a historic former railway bridge redeveloped in 2006 as a pedestrian and cycle path and public space. A series of metal statue-like structures called "The Travellers" has been erected along the bridge.

Southbank Footbridge

Another pedestrian crossing and one of Melbourne's most photographed structures. An interesting feature day and night is the curved beam that towers over the bridge.

Princes Bridge

The Princes Bridge is a historic bridge that connects Swanston Street Walk to St Kilda Road on the southern bank.

Swan Street Bridge

Links Swan St, Richmond on the north side to Alexandra Parade on the south side.

Morell Bridge

Also known as the Anderson St bridge, near the starting point of Yhe Tan running track.

Hoddle Bridge

Linking the north and south sides of Punt Road, where many years ago a punt operated between the two sides of the river.

Cremorne Rail Bridge

6 railway lines (3 each way) cross the Yarra River using this bridge.

Church Street Bridge

Links Church St, Richmond with Chapel St, South Yarra.

MacRobertson Bridge

A wonderful bridge named in honour of 'Mac' Robertson, Melbourne's greatest entrepreneur and philanthropist. Connects Grange Road, Toorak with Burnley Richmond.

Hawthorn Bridge

Hawthorn Bridge crosses the Yarra River five kilometers east of Melbourne connecting Bridge Road and Burwood Road. It is the oldest extant bridge over the Yarra River completed in February 1858.

Victoria Bridge

Johnston Street Bridge
