World of the Book | Free Tour

Celebrate the 20th edition of this one-of-a-kind exhibition as you journey through the evolution of the beloved book.

From the artistry of book design and production to the evolution of illustration, this tour charts the history of books from c. 2000 BCE to today.

World of the Book features more than 300 rare, remarkable and historically significant items from the State Collection, each with a unique story that highlights the cultural and emotional impact books have had across generations.

Highlights of the tour

Historical Treasures: Travel back in time to 1478 and marvel at an illuminated manuscript made for a Medici.
Intricate Prints: Get up close to one of the oldest printed texts in the world, the Hyakumant? Darani of Japan.
Fan Favourites: Browse fan art inspired by Andy Griffiths's beloved Treehouse series.
Meeting Point: Please meet your guide at Hansen Hall, located in the Swanston Street Welcome Zone.
