Moomba Birdman Rally 2027
On Sunday 7th March 2027 from 11am to 1pm the Birdman Rally is full of splashes, spills and thrills as everyday Melburnian's dress to impress and flap to fly - or fall, all in the name of charity.
This year, inventive homemade aircrafts and a splash of superhero flair return as fearless contenders take the plunge into the Yarra River – all for charity and a whole lot of laughs. In the lead‑up to their big jump, participants are once again rallying support and fundraising for worthy causes.
The hilariously spectacular Birdman Rally is a long-held Moomba tradition that sees courageous competitors hurtle themselves over the Yarra all in the name of charity.
Whether it be with the assistance of a fan-dangled flying machine or simply super-hero strength, these courageous souls won't get their feathers in a fluster! Leaping into the unknown they will hurtle themselves off the Birdman platform, aiming to be the victor and 'fly' furthest into the drink of the awaiting Yarra River.

Held in the middle of the Yarra River, opposite the boat sheds.

These competitors don’t mess around – they mean business and bring top quality sportsmanship, building techniques and aerodynamic expertise to the competition.

Moomba Birdman Rally
The Birdman Rally is a competition for home-made gliders, hang gliders and human-powered aircraft. The first Moomba Birdman Rally was held in 1976 and made a comeback in 2004 after a 6 year break.
The Moomba Birdman Rally is as part of the Moomba Festival held on the Labour Day long weekend.
This serious fun is for a good cause, with each jumper raising money and awareness for their nominated charities.
The Birdman Rally is run by the City of Melbourne.
