MAPh: the Australian home of photography and the William & Winifred Bowness Photography Prize
MAPh is Australia's leading public art museum devoted to the collection and exhibition of photography. It is a cultural institution of regional, state and national importance with the only collection focused solely on Australian photographs.
Our growing collection aims to provide a cogent and refined account of Australian photographic practices from the perspective of an art museum.
Currently approximately 40% of the MAPh Collection is available online with many records including extended texts and artist biographies to create a resource of Australian photographers and photographs for researchers, students, and the general public.
As well as gallery exhibitions, MAPh provides community access to our collection through an active touring program, external loans to art museums and galleries across the nation and updating our online resources that encourage engagement with Australian photography.
The collection
MAPh is the proud custodian of over 4,000 Australian photographs and we aim to provide access to our collection beyond our exhibitions. We achieve this through an active touring program and updating our online collection resources that encourage engagement with Australian photography.

Architecture
MAPh is situated on a parkland affording spectacular views of Melbourne's south-east.
Situated in landscaped grounds with stunning views of the Dandenong Ranges, MAPh is located on a landmark site once occupied by an early homestead. A sculpture park enables visitors to enjoy their art experience both inside and outside the gallery.
MGA's rebrand to MAPh
In March 2023, Monash Gallery of Art (MGA) rebranded to Museum of Australian Photography (MAPh).
MAPh, formerly known as MGA (Monash Gallery of Art), established its name more than thirty years ago at a time when the gallery collected and exhibited all types of visual art, including but not limited to paintings and sculpture, and photography.
Over the years, MGA's collection has come to be solely dedicated to Australian photography and has since established itself as the leading public gallery specialising in collecting Australian photographs and exhibiting photography.
We are Australia's leading museum exclusively dedicated to the collection, conservation, promotion and exhibition of photography.
MAPh remains the only public institution in the world solely dedicated to collecting Australian photographs. Our unique focus makes us one of the most culturally significant photography institutions in the country.
