Godfrey Hirst originally trained as a weaver in Yorkshire, the textiles centre of England, but moved to Australia in 1883, where he first found work at the Victorian Woollen and Cloth Manufacturing Company.
Hirst soon pivoted from artisan to entrepreneur and started his own company, eventually acquiring mills around Geelong.
Today, Godfrey Hirst is one of the leading manufacturers in Geelong, supporting and sustaining the local design industry.
