Kyle Archie Knight: Cruising for a Bruising
Kyle Archie Knight is a Wiradjuri queer photographic artist who has been exhibiting his work since 2022 when he completed a Bachelor of Arts (Photography) (First Class Honours) at RMIT University.
For this exhibition Knight presents old and new work from his ongoing series, Cruising for a Bruising. This long-form documentary project serves as a camp love letter to the Australian suburbs.
Growing up queer in outer metropolitan Naarm (Melbourne), Knight found the surrounding suburban landscape alienating and suffocating due to prevailing homophobic attitudes.
In Cruising for a Bruising Knight addresses these memories of estrangement by drawing inspiration from queer studies and camp aesthetics.
In doing so, he photographs through a queer camp lens, choosing to celebrate the unique and, at times, contradictory nature of the suburbs, which, as he notes, can be 'at once surreal and mundane, humorous and humdrum.'
The resulting images in Knight's series focus on humour and delight, revealing a playful, joyous and charming side of suburban Australia.
