Bar Paradiso - Espresso & FoodFrom Alfredo and Lisa La Spina, the people behind Bar Idda in Lygon Street Brunswick East, Bar Paradiso is a charming local day-time cafe, which will transport you to a timeless vintage espresso bar in the back streets of Sicily.
Our menu features traditional items found in espresso bars across Sicily as well as unique dishes that draw on Sicily's rich and diverse cuisine, tweaked for Aussie breakfast tastes. Everything tells a story such as 'Ciccio's special', a dish of toasted muesli and caffe latte panna cotta, dedicated to Alfredo's dad who would like to pour his morning coffee onto his Cornflakes. Other breakfast items include scrambled eggs with pork and fennel sausage and baked eggs with caciocavallo cheese, black olives, oregano and red wine vinegar.
Our lunch menu features traditional Sicilian dishes such as Arancini, Pasta alla Norma (tomato and smoked eggplant spaghetti with salted ricotta) and a range of Panini filled with fresh Italian ingredients such as sliced Mortadella and Caciocavallo cheese. Fast becoming a favourite with our regulars is our 'Palermo Burger' featuring two of our most favourite Palermo street snacks- chickpea fritters and pork gelatina.
Sweet treats are also covered with Sicilian favourites such as our famous Cannolo (home made shells filled with sweetened ricotta) and traditional Zeppole (Italian style doughnut coated in saffron infused honey).
Throughout Italy going into your local bar multiple times a day to refuel yourself on espresso is part of the daily routine. It's cheap, fast and fun and we decided the same should apply at Bar Paradiso, in order for us to be truly considered Italian. A fine drop of Genovese as an espresso is only $2, while regular coffees are $3 and large $4. We have a stand up bar along our front window too, perfectly designed for a cafine hit. The rest of the drinks list features a great range of Italian wine, beers, aperitivi, digestivi, soft drinks and of course Granita.
All our food is hand made by our chefs at Bar Idda using fresh local produce. Bar Paradiso's owners Alfredo and Lisa La Spina opened Bar Idda, their restaurant in Brunswick East almost 4 years ago. Alfredo, a chef for almost 20 years and son of Sicilian immigrants found his passion for Sicilian cuisine while discovering his parents home land well over a decade ago. After numerous return trips over the years with his wife Lisa, also of Italian heritage, they have discovered more about Sicily's unique cuisine that has been shaped by thousands of years of history. Drawing on their knowledge and love of Sicilan cuisine, Bar Idda is not only home style but also very clever food- it is a cultural experience. Having both grown up on farms in North East Victoria, their understanding of fresh and seasonal produce is impressive and the menu reflects this also. 4 years on, Bar Idda has now gained a reputation for being one of the best restaurants in Melbourne for traditional and authentic Sicilian cuisine.
