Ned Kelly | Bushranger

The infamous Edward "Ned" Kelly was born near Melbourne in January 1855 and hanged at the Melbourne gaol on 11 November 1880. Ned Kelly and his gang are Australia's most famous bushrangers, pursued by police for robbery and murder, his capture was finally made after a gun fight with police at Glenrowan. Kelly Armour Ned Kelly's life and armour are firmly embedded in Australian folklore. The armour held by the State Library of Victoria includes Ned Kelly's helmet, backplate, breastplate and shoulderplate. Crudely constructed from parts of ploughs, pieces of leather, and iron bolts, the armour was assembled and tested by the gang in the year before the Glenrowan raid. The sets of armour belonging to gang members Dan Kelly and Steve Hart can be seen at the Victoria Police Museum. Jerilderie Letter Only two original documents by Ned Kelly are known to have survived. The most significant of these is the Jerilderie Letter, dictated by Ned Kelly to Joe Byrne in February 1879. The original is held by The State Library of Victoria, where four pages of the Letter are on display with Ned's armour, together with some photos and other items related to the Kelly story.
