White Night will be expanded to a three-day event and moved to winter

MELBOURNE'S annual allnight summer party White Night will be shifted to winter and expanded to a three-day extravaganza under a multimillion-dollar shake-up.

In a move that should entice major artists in the lead-up to footy finals, the Andrews Government plans to introduce the new three-day party next August.

Like White Night, it will still include a 24-hour event across Melbourne and inner suburbs, but a name change is on the cards.

Music will be central to the new line-up, but all elements that make up the current festival — such as light shows, performance art, film, and design

— will be maintained.

International acts may be part of the event, but producers are planning to focus heavily on emerging Australian acts and use small and medium event spaces, as well as Rod Laver Arena or other stadiums.

Mushroom Group chairman Michael Gudinski, who will be on an advisory panel, said the event would bring “Melbourne after dark to life” .

“Melbourne is the envy of the nation when it comes to live music and for good reason

— we have more live music venues per capita than any other global city including New York, London, Tokyo and Los Angeles,” he said.

Tourism Minister John Eren said the “new winter festival will boost local businesses , support jobs and cement our reputation as the cultural and major events capital of Australia” .

White Night has run for six years and was the brainchild of former premier Ted Baillieu.

But the summer scheduling has caused some concern as the event grew over time.
