Views and Vistas of the Valley
Incinerator Gallery - Moonee Ponds
Views and Vistas of the Valley presents a compelling visual dialogue between place, history, community and perception drawn from the Moonee Valley City Council (MVCC) Art Collection, unfolding across the entirety of Incinerator Gallery.
The MVCC Art Collection reflects, celebrates and contributes to the authentic and distinctive culture of Moonee Valley. Its breadth spans media including painting, sculpture, ceramic, glass, textile and community-generated works-as well as site-responsive public art, murals and mosaics-all of which speak to the lived experiences, landscapes, and civic narratives of this dynamic region.
In Views and Vistas of the Valley, the exhibition brings together selected works that explore three intertwined genres: architecture and design; natural and civic landscape; and people and still-life. Together, these genres offer multiple vantage points on what it means to live in, look at, and belong to this valley landscape.
Within the architectural and design genre, works reveal how built form-whether historic civic structures or evolving suburban fabric-shapes, and is shaped, by community identity. Landscape works extend this conversation into natural and municipal space: from depictions of waterways or parks that are sites of recreation and memory, to interpretations of ecological shifts over time. In the genre of people and still-life, artists foreground the intimate and everyday: figures, objects, and scenes that embody personal connection and cultural narrative.
Incinerator Gallery-itself a heritage building of architectural significance-becomes both a container and generative ground for this exhibition. Its spaces, from gallery halls to transitional nooks, are activated as sites where historic and contemporary viewpoints meet, where local histories are refracted through the diverse practices of artists and community makers.
Across Views and Vistas of the Valley, audiences are invited to consider the ways art can amplify place-its histories, its transformations, its everyday resonances-and to recognise the MVCC Art Collection as a living archive of cultural memory and creative expression. Here, vistas are not merely visual landscapes, but layered intersections of social life, environmental presence and civic belonging.
Views and Vistas of the Valley: Works from the MVCC Art Collection extends an invitation to see the valley anew: to appreciate the panoramic and the personal, the structured and the spontaneous, and the many ways in which a community can be seen-and can see itself-through art.
