Swinging Sixties Exhibition Explores a Decade That Changed Victoria

A Decade of Change

The 1960s was a decade that challenged convention and reshaped society. In contrast to the conservative values of the 1950s the era became synonymous with changing ideas youthful rebellion and experimentation. New music bold fashions and evolving attitudes to authority defined a generation determined to forge its own identity.

As the post-war baby boom generation came of age young people became an increasingly visible and influential part of Victorian society. By 1971 almost 40 per cent of Melbourne's population was under the age of 21. Full employment and rising wages gave many young Australians unprecedented spending power creating a thriving youth culture with its own magazines fashions and music.

Exploring Life in 1960s Victoria

This exhibition examines what everyday life was like in Victoria during one of the country's most dynamic decades. Visitors are invited to consider how the 1960s differed from the years before and after and whether the popular image of the era as a time of sex drugs and rock 'n' roll truly reflected life in Victoria.

Through original artefacts photographs and memorabilia the exhibition explores the social cultural and political movements that shaped the decade and left a lasting impact on Australian society.

Highlights on Display

Among the exhibition's highlights are original protest records and political ephemera costumes including one worn by Judith Durham of The Seekers and fashion designs by renowned Australian designer Prue Acton. Visitors can also view objects relating to the introduction of the contraceptive pill which transformed social attitudes during the decade along with a special display celebrating Barbie and her enduring legacy featuring an original 1960s Barbie doll and accessories.

Whether you lived through the decade or are discovering it for the first time this exhibition offers a fascinating glimpse into the people events and ideas that helped define modern Victoria.
