Stawell Gift Weekend

Since 1878 the race is run on grass over 120 metres up a slight gradient. Competitors are handicapped according to their form.

The Stawell Gift Calcutta

The Calcutta and Call of the Card has been a feature of the Stawell Gift since the 1940's. The draw is released, raffle tickets bought and the action begins when the auctioneer calls for bids for each heat. Held at the Stawell Town Hall, the Calcutta is a true punter's night.

Ladies Day

All the action starts on Ladies Day Saturday, whilst off the track the Fashions on the Field gives fashionista's a chance to showcase their latest autumn looks ahead of the running of the Men and Women's Gift Semi Finals.

Family Day

It's Cadbury* Family Day on Sunday with free entry for kids. The Cadbury Easter Egg Hunt is the biggest in the Grampians region and with a special visit from the Cadbury Easter Bunny it's the only place to be. There's plenty of other activities as well including a kids athletic clinic hosted by Matty B featuring Australia's elite athletes, an autograph signing session, Kelly Sports clinic, face painting, animal nursery and a jumping castle.

Gift Finals Day

The carnival culminates with the Mens & Women's Gift Finals. A 3 and half hour live broadcast is televised on Channel Seven from 11.30am capturing the history and tradition of the event, showcasing regional Victoria and the colour and excitement of the Stawell Gift Carnival.

The Stawell Gift is run at Central Park on a grass track run in lanes that are separated by lane ropes, not painted lines. The famous finish gates are one of the most iconic features of the Gift.

The Age Digital Edition: Stalled: Gift may not keep on giving
December 2019

Australia's most famous athletic event, the Stawell Gift, is in danger of collapse after the race's organisers rejected a $1.4million rescue package from the Victorian government , a move the club's former patron has described as an " unjustifiable betrayal'' .

The historic Gift, the richest and most prestigious footrace in Australia , has struggled for years and now faces an uncertain future. The Gift needed a $140,000 Victorian government bailout to run this year, but a long-term state government financial package and management overhaul has been rejected by race organiser , the Stawell Athletic Club.

Sports Minister Martin Pakula said when the government bailed out the event this year with an emergency $138,000, the club signed a memorandum of understanding that further funding would be conditional on changes to the commercial, governance and non-racing elements of the event. " It remains open to the Stawell Athletics Club to accept the review recommendations and associated funding support,'' he said.

The decision to reject the government proposal prompted Stawell patron Luke Versace to quit his post, claiming Gift organisers had put selfinterest ahead of the event. " Unfortunately discharging this responsibility [as patron] now requires me to publicly state that I have lost faith in the SAC committee to act in the best interests of the event, as opposed to in the interests of themselves,'' Versace said in an open letter of resignation .

The state government had offered the club a financial bailout worth $280,000 a year for five years to help salvage the race as an event and set it up for the future.

The government proposed a new board of management, comprising members of government, the SAC, local council, tourism board, marketing and broadcasting experts.

Versace said: " If a deal cannot be reached between the state government and the SAC in the next couple of days, the Stawell Gift as we know it will be forever gone.''
