Saturday 12th April 2025 - Tuesday 30th September 2025 | free entry

The display is part of NGV's Artist Room series, which invites audiences to take a closer look at individual artists.

Marking ten years since the passing of Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori, The Colour of Memory showcases the artistic vision of her bold abstract paintings.

Gabori's work blends deeply personal narratives with an expressive, modern visual language, continuously redefining conventional notions of First Peoples Australian art.

The display offers a new perspective on Gabori's art, focusing on her radical departure from dot painting traditions, using sweeping gestures and luminous colours to map memory and place.

It highlights her late-life emergence as an artist and her unique role in Kaiadilt cultural storytelling.

Key highlights include Dibirdibi Country, 2007, which evokes the movement of Bentinck Island's waters, symbolising her connection to Country despite forced displacement.

This Artist Room honours Gabori's impact on contemporary art and showcases a range of her most internationally recognised works.
