Your support transforms the lives of veterans and their families
The transition from the ADF back into civilian life can have added challenges. For many, the challenges experienced during service leave the veteran and their family with health conditions that will affect them throughout the rest of their lives.
The RSL often speaks of the increased risk of homelessness faced by the veteran community, the difficulties finding the supports that are needed and the increased financial strain many can find themselves under. These difficulties are ever- increasing as housing affordability, social isolation and cost-of-living pressures can add stress, compounding underlying service-related health conditions.
Distressingly, analysis undertaken earlier this year as part of the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Suicide revealed just how serious the problems faced by the veteran community are. Between 2011 and 2021, there was an average of 78 recorded suicides by serving or ex-serving Defence members per year.
This equates to three deaths per fortnight.
These findings underscore the importance of the work undertaken by the RSL in Victoria.
All of us, through our involvement with the RSL, play a vital part in supporting veterans and their families.
