Melbourne Phoenix Netball

Anyone watching the Melbourne Phoenix Netball team on the ABC last night could not help but admire the dedication and enthusiasm.

Melbourne Phoenix created history in 2003, being the first team to win an 'AWAY' Grand Final. After the smallest of margins loss (1 goal) in the qualifying final at home, Phoenix lost the right to host the Grand Final.

Showing true grit and determination, they accounted for the Adelaide Thunderbirds in the preliminary final before stunning the Sydney TAB Swifts on their home court. The final margin only 3 goals, as the Phoenix came out victors 47-44.

They are now the most successful team in the history of the competition, having won 4 premierships in the 7 years since it started.

Coach's Comment:
Phoenix has much to look forward to including the naming of the new leadership group (following the retirement of Liz Boniello) with 2003 CBT Most Valuable Player, Sharelle McMahon joining Eloise Southby as co-captain.

I know that Sharelle is mightily proud of this honour and is ready for the challenges she will face as a leader of the club. We have two new players joining the Phoenix; Peta Stephens from the Queensland Firebirds and Hayley Warne from the AIS CAnberra Darters. They are both excited and ready for the many challenges they face just to make the team of 12!
