Melbourne Outrigger Canoe Club

The Melbourne Outrigger Canoe Club (MOCC) was formed in 2003 to foster the growth in the traditional Polynesian sport and provide a community for like minded sporting enthusiasts.

Teamwork, fitness for life, connection with earth and water and the elements, the rhythm of bodies working in unison, the exhilaration of the chase, the taste of salt water and a connection with ancient cultural practice of the Polynesians. These elements are embodied in the practice and sport of Outrigger Canoeing.

For tens of thousands of years Polynesian people have used these sleek, streamlined and graceful craft as the primary means of transport between their island homes. During the 20th century, Outrigger Canoeing has evolved into a highly contested modern sport that pits athletes against their own psychological and physical limits, each other and the elements on the oceans of the world. Originally centred around the Pacific, the sport is now capturing the imagination of peoples from all corners of the planet and is becoming a truly global sport.

Melbourne Outrigger Canoe Club was formed in 2003, and is now based in Docklands in the heart of Melbourne. The Club is one of six in Victoria, joining Geelong, Kai Opua, Inland, Torquay, and Patterson Lakes Outrigger Canoe Clubs.

Our club is open and welcoming for all paddlers of all ages and abilities. The club trains from Docklands Harbour, with access to the Yarra River and beautiful Port Phillip Bay. Melbourne Outriggers competes in the regular Southern States regatta series as well as National Championships. The club has also attended international events in the Cook Islands, Fiji, and Hawaii.
