Health experts meet in Melbourne |
HEALTH experts from around the world will gather in Melbourne today to tackle some of the most important health issues.
The 18th world conference on health promotion, held under the auspices of the International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE), was opened yesterday by the Director-General of the World Health Organisation, Dr Lee Jong-wook.
Health4004 conference sessions will cover a wide range of health promotion issues such as healthy ageing, HIV/AIDS, mental health, men's health, physical activity, accident prevention, sun and skin cancer, smoking, health in the workplace and young people.
It is the largest international health promotion conference in the world.
The co-chair of Health4004 and chief executive of the Victorian Health Promotion Foundation (VicHealth), Dr Rob Moodie, said there was "little doubt that health promotion and prevention are highly effective in reducing death, disability and providing great economic returns for the investments made".
"But prevention attracts only 2 per cent of the health budget,"he said. "We need to get better at demonstrating that a dollar spent on prevention is worth a thousand dollars of treatment."
In addition to a focus on health in developing countries, he said, a significant proportion of the research being presented at the conference has been conducted by Australian academics.
Australian topics to be discussed include child obesity and promotion activities targeted at getting men to seek regular health check-ups.
Among the prominent speakers due to address plenary sessions are: Nafis Sadik, the UN special envoy on AIDS in Asia; Jeff Koplan, former director of the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and Antanas Mockus, the mayor of the Colombian capital of Bogota.
The conference, at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, ends on Friday.
