Eddie McGuire set to return to The AFL Footy Show

"What a big week it’s been in football".

For 11 years it's how Eddie McGuire would welcome viewers to The Footy Show and not since it's inception back in 1994 has the show, itself, endured such a big week.

In short, Eddie's back.

McGuire will return to the hosting chair at a time when the show is in desperate need of resuscitation, and whether Eddie is the man to breathe new life into it remains to be seen.

There's still a heartbeat, make no mistake about that.

McGuire is aiming to bring the show back to its glory days when it provided footy fans with a feast of breaking news and, courtesy of Sam Newman, sheer irreverence.

On Thursday night’s show, Sam almost rendered himself mute.

Only Sam and management know the real reason behind odd behaviour, but, clearly, he’ll revel in the prospect of having his old mate, Eddie, back alongside him.

That’s in no way a whack at Craig Hutchison who has made way for McGuire’s return.

Hutchy was always going to be up against it.

For much of his celebrated media career he's been a polarising figure, a characteristic the he, himself, concedes.

Hutchison will continue to host Footy Classified on Monday nights.

But what of Thursday nights?

There's no doubt that Eddie will be the one calling the shots both on and off camera.

That’s how he operated for 11 years.

In his reincarnation as host, McGuire will have a sidekick; Rebecca Maddern who’ll stay on as co-host.

Just what plans are in store for any overhaul are yet to be announced, that’ll be sorted out over the next two weeks when the show goes into recess.

A risky move, but McGuire has never been one to retreat from a risk.

Nor has he baulked at a heavy workload.

McGuire will continue to fulfil his Fox Footy commitments as well as hosting Hot Seat and his radio show. But he said he was excited to return to the show he started as host in 24 years ago.

“This show is such a vital part of the passion that AFL fans enjoy," McGuire said.

"As sport and television continue to change I intend to be a part of the next wave. Now in its 24th year, I look forward to how the program will evolve and be ready for the next 20 years.”

"For me, The Footy Show has been my passion."

When asked whether it was years in the making, McGuire laughed.

"It's been hours in the making. There have been discussions over the journey over the last few years. There have been discussions today when it's all taken off."

"When we started this show 24 years ago we were given six weeks. We've told that it wouldn't work.

"The show doesn't need saving. It's been under a lot of pressure, but we're ready to knock people's socks off.

"I've missed being there over the last ten years."

Nine CEO Hugh Marks said of the move: "The AFL Footy Show is such an important part of our network. I couldn’t wish for a better partner to work with as we evolve the show for the fans in the modern era of football."

Rebecca Maddern, who has hosted the program for the past two seasons said; "I look forward to working alongside Eddie McGuire who was such a huge part of The Footy Show in its early years and remains such a prominent figure in the world of AFL. He’s a consummate host and it will be a great experience to work together on such an incredible show."

Craig Hutchison said, "It’s been a great honour and privilege to host one of Australia’s iconic TV shows. As a businessman, I fully understand and support the opportunity to bring back Eddie. He’s the original host and the best host on Australian television.

"I can't speak highly enough of the producers and the people I work with, and I’ll be enthusiastically supporting The Footy Show and all involved in future."

Unlike his diary, McGuire himself is no longer bulging.

He's now match fit.

Which is just as well; it's game on.
