Frank Herbert's sprawling science-fiction saga gets a deliberately low-rent makeover in DUNE BUT WORSE, a solo clown show created by Sean Burnett Dugdale-Martin and presented by Te Whanganui-a-Tara / Wellington company Ruff as Gutz.

Rather than attempting a reverent adaptation, the show tackles Dune with gleeful disregard for its scale and seriousness. Dugdale-Martin moves through the saga using clowning, audience interaction and an improbable sandworm costume, turning Herbert's dense desert universe into live comedy.

Ruff as Gutz describes its work as performance built around chaos and joy, and DUNE BUT WORSE arrives in Victoria after a successful 2026 NZ Fringe season. The production won both the Melbourne Fringe Tour Ready Award and Most Innovative Work at the Wellington festival, while also receiving a nomination for Memorable Marketing.

The Melbourne Fringe Tour Ready Award has brought the production across the Tasman for its Victorian season. Dugdale-Martin is joined behind the scenes by producer Tom Smith of Believable Arts Management and stage manager Tyler Clarke.

The show is classified by Melbourne Fringe as comedy with silly, joyful and interactive elements. Audience participation is part of the performance, while content warnings include death, murder and staged violence. The Melbourne Fringe listing also confirms wheelchair accessibility.
