Questionable day trip... Cruise Ship Spotting on Phillip Island

Cruise Ship Spotting on Phillip Island 2023-24

Sunday 10th December 2023 - Saturday 17th February 2024

The cruise ships are visiting again this year and cruise ship spotting has become an entertainment and one that is not only free but is far more accessible than you might think.

This cruising season, from December 2023 to February 2024, seven cruise ships will make ten visits to Phillip Island, listed in order of arrival date.

Forget the traffic hazards and congestion of the Melbourne ports area and take a pleasant day trip to Phillip Island, where there will be no shortage of great vantage points.

The ships are at anchor all day and Phillip Island is an easy day trip from Melbourne.

All the ships anchor offshore from Rhyll.

Passengers come ashore by tender and alight at the Rhyll jetty. You can view the tenders arriving and departing from the Rhyll Jetty Precinct, Beach Road, Rhyll, on Phillip Island.

Suggested vantage points to view and photograph the ships, which cannot be seen from the jetty, are from the Rhyll Inlet carpark at the end of McIlwratih Road, where there is a walk along the shoreline from Rhyll Inlet to Conservation Hill. Alternatively, you could view the ships from the end of the residential streets of either Jansson Road or Walton Street, where there is some room to park.

At around one-and-three-quarter hours from the Melbourne CBD and around an hour from Cranbourne along the South Gippsland and Bass Coast Highways, this holiday paradise and tourist mecca is close enough for a day trip and tempting enough for a long stay.

Often called Melbourne's playground, this area has something for everyone. With coastline on Westernport Bay and the Bass Strait, it is a beach lover's delight. Inland the landscape is one of beautiful rolling hills, farmland and bushland.
