Camberwell Community Centre
Camberwell Community Centre prides itself on providing programs and activities for the local Boroondara community.
We offer Adult art, well being, langauge and general interest programs and a variety of adult activity groups. We also offer programs for school aged children. We are a meeting point for many local groups and organisations and offer a variety of rooms and a large hall for hire.
Spawned in the 1970s, during a period of social change, and 'grass roots' activism, the Camberwell Community Centre was a successful attempt to recreate a sense of community based on nurturing feelings of interdependence and self reliance.
The founders, mainly women volunteers, saw the need for a place where local people of all ages could meet informally to share skills and knowledge and find companionship. They understood the diversity of needs within the community. They recognised that providing this venue was a way to strengthen social solidarity.
Initially organised and managed entirely by volunteers the Centre has, over time, employed increasing numbers of paid staff.
Over the years this Centre has touched the lives of tens of thousands of Camberwell residents and in so doing has given real meaning to the word 'community'
Leighton & Chambly
Camberwell Community Centre has two sites (1km apart) - 33-35 Fairholm Grove (Leighton) and 405 Camberwell Road (Chambly).
Leighton and Chambly are available for hire. Rooms available include a hall which seats up to 100, a light purpose built art studio and three differing sized carpeted rooms suitable for meetings or workshops.
Camberwell Community Centre redevelopment
We are building a new Camberwell Community Centre at 33-35 Fairholm Grove Camberwell. (the street behind Target & Safeway)
The 12-month construction process is planned to start in early-mid 2019 with the new building to open in mid-2020.
Fairholm Grove activities and programs plan to relocate to the space above the Camberwell Market and to 25 Inglesby Road Camberwell (opposite the Council offices).
Chambly (405 Camberwell Road) activities will continue there until construction is finished. They will then relocate to the new Fairholm Grove building.
