British High Commission

In Australia, the British High Commissioner represents the British Government in its relations with the Australian Government.

The British High Commissioner to Australia is the Rt Hon Helen Liddell. Her CV and a downloadable photo are available online.

The tasks of the High Commissioner are to present British policies to the Australian Government and to Australians, to report and explain Australian policies and views to her/his own Government in London, and to promote British interests. The High Commissioner is based at the British High Commission in Canberra but travels regularly to the States and Territories.

In carrying out these tasks the British High Commissioner and her/his staff deal with political, commercial, defence and economic questions of interest to Britain and Australia. The High Commissioner is also responsible for press and cultural relations, and the issue of British passports, entry clearances and visas through the High Commission Consular Section.
