A STATE memorial service will be held to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of the horrific Black Saturday bushfires that killed 173 people.

A series of local community events and creative arts projects will also be supported by a $4.4 million fund set up by the state government to support affected communities.

Thousands of homes and properties were destroyed and more than 450,000ha of land burned during the fires in January and February in 2009, which culminated in Black Saturday on February 7.

Governor of Victoria Linda Dessau will be the patron for the state’s commemorations and will travel to bushfire-affected communities.

Emergency Services Minister James Merlino said it was important the “catastrophic events” were commemorated by communities “in their own way” .

“Remembering these tragic events is important so we can honour those who died, those who lost their homes and were displaced, and the people who prevented further loss and destruction,” Mr Merlino said.

Former premier John Brumby will head an advisory panel to plan events.
