Air Ambulance Helicopters
Air Ambulance Victoria operates five air ambulance helicopters. These are based at Essendon, Bendigo, the Latrobe Valley and Warrnambool.
Four helicopters are part of the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS). The fifth helicopter is based at Essendon and while also used for emergency work, is also equipped as a specialist helicopter for retrieving patients needing priority transfer between rural hospitals and specialist services in Melbourne. It is used by Victoria's three retrieval services: Adult Retrieval Victoria (ARV), Paediatric Emergency Transport Service (PETS) and Neonatal Emergency Transport Service (NETS).
Angel Of Mercy
Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) began operating in Victoria from 1970 with the establishment of Peninsula's Ambulance Service's 'Angel Of Mercy' operating out of Tyabb Airfield, being manned by local Paramedics.
Air Ambulance Aeroplanes
Air Ambulance Victoria operates four ambulance aeroplanes from Essendon headquarters and can reach most of Victoria within an hour.
The current fleet of air ambulance planes is made up of King Air 200C with the engineering and piloting outsourced to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
Air ambulance planes are used mainly for transporting patients from rural towns to the major hospitals in Melbourne. This service includes bringing people to Melbourne for regular treatments such as oncology and dialysis. They are also used for patients who need to be transferred from rural hospitals for specialist care.
