Victorian Government Announces Funding For New State Soccer Centre [28 October 2002].

Yesterday, in Melbourne, the Minister for Sport and Recreation and Commonwealth Games, Justin Madden, announced State Government funding for the development of a State Soccer Centre which will be located at John Cain Memorial Park in Northcote.

Manny Galanos, Chairman of the VSF, thanked Justin Madden, the Victorian Government and the Mayor of Darebin Council, Vince Fontana for the commitment they have given to the State Soccer Centre.

The Victorian Government has contributed $3.75 million to this project through the Community Support Fund. Darebin Council’s contribution is $500,000 in direct funding as well as the land and an existing change room pavilion, valued at $3.5 million. The VSF will contribute $1 million over the next 10 years to establish its Administration base at the Centre. This will be funded through leasing of the VSF Dorcas Street offices in South Melbourne. The State Soccer Centre will open in 2004.

The Centre will greatly assist initiatives to meet the huge demand for the game in Victoria.

Training and development programs for coaches, administrators and referees will allow the VSF to extend support for the huge network of volunteers that give their time generously to the game.

Soccer programs for disadvantaged sections of the community including children with special needs, Koori children and recently arrived migrant groups will also be expanded. Opportunities will be enhanced for State and National Championships to be held in Victoria and our best young male and female players will benefit from the excellent facilities to be established at the Centre..

VSF Chairman, Manny Galanos said "On behalf of all Victorian
Stakeholders, I would like to thank the State Government and the City of Darebin for their generous support. At a time when soccer is booming in Victoria at the grass roots level, we are naturally very excited about the opportunities that will be created by the establishment of the State Soccer Centre.
