Statue : Charles La Trobe

Statue : Charles La Trobe

Our favourite Melbourne statue is the upside down statue of Charles La Trobe located at La Trobe University in Bundoora.

The picture above was taken when the 5m statue was installed oposite the new City Museum in Gordon Reserve as part of the Making Melbourne exhibition at the Old Treasury building. In 2007, the statue was moved back to its home at La Trobe University in Bundoora.

Charles La Trobe held office from 1839 to 1854, helping to establish the Royal Botanic Gardens, State Library, Museum of Victoria, National Gallery of Victoria and University of Melbourne.

Melbourne sculptor Charles Robb turned Victoria's first lieutenant-governor, Charles La Trobe, on his head, says it embodies the notion that universities should turn ideas on their heads.

Some are offended by the statue of La Trobe, which was unveiled at La Trobe Uni's Bundoora campus. "It's the one work on our campus that has generated debate," Vincent Alessi, curator at La Trobe, said. "Most people ask, why is it upside down? Is it disrespectful? Is it us taking the piss out of ourselves?"

It’s that upside down lad again – at home in Bundoora.

Monuments are about remembering, says Australian sculptor Charles Robb: so it’s fitting that his controversial likeness of the Victorian colonial Governor Charles Joseph La Trobe now cocks its upside down snoot at the world from the Bundoora campus of La Trobe University.
