Welcome to this week's Melbourne events, exhibitions, sports and community guide for Tuesday October 13 to Monday October 19, 2009.
This week… Saddle up and get the hell outta Dodge (that’s Melbourne to all you laymen) or at least make your way a little out of Dodge because there’s a fine smattering of Victorian festivals doing the rounds with events including Victoria’s longest running sustainability shindig with the Stringybark Festival in Rowville, the fine wining and dining of the Rutherglen Agricultural Show and a day of celebrations with the Main Street Mornington Festival.
The last two are self explanatory so if you’re not clear about where they’re being held then I’m surprised you even found your keyboard – that’s the plastic book on your desk that doesn’t read well, by the way.
As for Melbourne, (that’s Dodge to all you city-slicker scholarly types) there’s still plenty to see and do with the Melbourne International Arts Festival and a series of events that kick off this week to help raise funds for next year’s Spring Fling, North Melbourne’s community street festival.
There’s also OzKinkFest showcasing the naughtier side of Melbourne’s nightlife where you can get in touch with your inner gimp once you get past your outer latex, buckles, straps, laces and possibly your inhibitions. In any case, you'll find me there... I'll be the gimp in the white latex mask being whipped by a bearded lady.

Major Events Guide

 The Main Street Mornington Festival celebrates the local region’s food, wine and performing arts with the main street playing host to seventy exhibitors showcasing fresh produce and some of Australia’s best wine makers along with two stages featuring live performances and a children’s arcade.

 The Rutherglen Agricultural Show offers a day of fun for people of all ages with displays of arts and crafts with needlework, photography and floral exhibitions. Held at Rutherglen Show Grounds the show features sideshow attractions and animals with performing ducks and dogs.

 Melbourne International Arts Festival, Australia's premier celebration of performing arts, offers an enormous program that draws on the talents of some of the finest artists and performers from across the world. With dance, theatre, music, visual arts, and more, it’s held at various venues.

 The Swiss Italian Festa, held in Hepburn Springs and Daylesford, celebrates the heritage of Swiss and Italian settlers who arrived more than 150 years ago. With over sixty events held in the two townships, the festival features sports tournaments, open studio tours, exhibitions and more.

 The October Art Food Wine Festival on the Mornington Peninsula showcases the work of local artists, winemakers and chefs. With artwork shown in gardens and galleries, the program includes a Studio Trail with some of the region’s great artists, literary lunches, artisan tours, gourmet trails and more.

 Spring Fling’s Fundraising Week is held to drum up support for one of the most unique community festivals when next year’s biennial event will see North Melbourne’s Errol Street hosting a huge all age’s festival. Special events will be held at various venues in North and West Melbourne.

 Ceramics Victoria will be holding their 40th Anniversary Exhibition at Manningham Gallery in Doncaster. The exhibition, which includes a national award, celebrates past efforts in promoting a higher standard of craftsmanship while also showcasing current movements in the craft.

 Salt and the Dress, the latest works by Lesley Dickman, will be exhibited at Collingwood's Cambridge Studio Gallery. With work held in collections that include the St Vincent Hospital Collection and private collections internationally, her depictions of empty gowns are hauntingly beautiful.

 Hook, Line and Sinker, an exhibition by Mona Ryder at Fitzroy’s Alcaston Gallery, explores the social, cultural and religious influences that shape psyche and memory. Using unexpected objects such as crutches to form a crucifix, her work examines a diverse range of social and cultural issues.

 New Paintings by Cathy Drummond will be shown at fortyfivedownstairs in Flinders Lane. A local artist whose paintings have featured in several publications, her work depicts the urban landscape of Melbourne, reflecting the changing landscape of this city and how we live amongst it.

 Kathy Temin, a highly acclaimed Melbourne-based artist, is being exhibited at Heide Museum of Modern Art in Bulleen. Reflecting her personal history and Jewish heritage, her work uses unconventional materials that playfully capture the trash and treasure aesthetics of global pop culture.

 The House of Hallmarcos, held at Melbourne’s Until Never, celebrates thirty years of practice by bespoke jeweller, Marcos Davidson. Featuring three major bodies of his work, Sonic Selectors, Head Takers and Lapidem, the exhibition includes an installation of paintings exploring his family tree.
When: Oct 14 to Nov 15 - Wednesdays to Saturdays
 Monster Zoo, an exhibition by jeweller Justine Austen, will be held at Pieces of Eight in North Fitzroy. Consisting of strange and curious creatures, her menagerie is meticulously handcrafted from sterling silver and a diverse range of materials including gemstones, bone and coral.

 Reflections, held at the gallery Chapel on Station in Box Hill, is an exhibition of photography by Andrew Follows. Legally blind with only tunnel vision in one eye, Andrew is an inspiring, and rapidly, established photographer whose work offers a unique way of seeing the world as he does.

 Anatomy to Robots, showing at Southbank’s Queensbridge Square, is a remarkable exhibition that brings the designs of Leonardo da Vinci to life. One of the world’s greatest and inventive minds, the exhibition shows his passion for nature, science and art with life size recreations of his works.

 The Wildlife of Gondwana Exhibition, held at Monash University in Clayton, is a collection of fauna, flora and dinosaurs that showcases the research of some of the worlds leading palaeontologists with fossil records that span changes from 3.8 billion years ago to the present.

 All About Wildlife, an exhibition by the Wildlife Art Society, showcases the wide range of artwork created by members with artwork capturing wildlife and flora from Australia and overseas. Held at the Barn Gallery of Montsalvat in Eltham with drawings, paintings and sculptures, all work is for sale.

 Strike a Pose with Lee Lin Chin is a photographic exhibition held at the Victorian Archives Centre in North Melbourne. Showcasing the Australian fashion scene of the 1960's and 70's, the show co-curated by Lee Lin Chin, host of Fashionista, explores the influences that shaped Australian fashion.

 Shelter: On Kindness is an exhibition of work by artists, architects, writers and thinkers invited to reflect on what qualities of environment and circumstance afford us shelter in a physical and metaphorical sense. Inspired by the book, On Kindness, by Adam Phillips, it’s at Melbourne’s RMIT Gallery.
When: Runs Until October 25 – Monday to Saturday
 The Leica/CCP Documentary Photography Award showcases the work of Australia’s contemporary documentary photographers. Appearing at Bundoora Homestead Art Centre, award finalists in the show capture diverse views ranging from war photography to quiet observations.

Open Days, Expos & Launches
 A Seniors Healthy Ageing Expo will be held in Moonee Ponds at the Kellaway Avenue Neighbourhood Centre. With information stalls and the chance to listen to guest speakers, the day is free to attend and includes special activities with demonstrations such as bollywood dancing and tai chi.

 It Came From Student Theatre, held at the University of Melbourne’s Union Theatre, is a celebration of Melbourne’s student theatre scene with excerpts taken from current student theatre works at four major universities. The evening includes a Culture Quiz, audience Q & A and more.

 Apocalypse Bear Trilogy, presented at Southbank’s Lawler Studio of Melbourne Theatre Company, is the latest work by Lally Katz. The quirky performance tells of two outcasts whose lives intertwine, brought together by the mysterious and strange actions of the even stranger Apocalypse Bear.

 Picasso at The Lapin Agile, the absurd comedy penned by Steve Martin, examines science, art and many other fine points of life when Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein meet in a small bar in France well before they become household names. Shows are held at Chapel Off Chapel in Prahran.

 When the Rain Stops Falling, performed by Melbourne Theatre Company at their Southbank theatre, is Andrew Bovell’s award-winning play about the relationship between a father and son, and how a rain of fish from the sky could signal the end of a rift that began eighty years earlier.

 Bitter, Sweet & Twisted, held at Chapel Off Chapel, is a performance by the acclaimed Noel Coward vocalist, John Michael Swinbank. Featuring some of the greatest songs by the witty Noel Coward, the performance includes songs from other greats like Stephen Sondheim, Cole Porter and others.

Dance
 Down The Rabbit Hole, a dance performance held at St Kilda’s Theatre Works, is the latest production of Collaboration The Project, featuring talented and innovating new performers. The performance offers an interpretation of Lewis Carrol’s classic with darkly comical twists.

 Afro Mandinko, the most vibrant band performing African music, will be appearing at Northcote Social Club throughout October. Having returned from international touring, their performances offer a unique audio-visual journey with African cultural footage, giveaways and special guests.

 Stardust Circus, Australia's largest circus with animals, will be performing at Gateway Island, a unique arts venue located on the Murray River of Albury.  Circus Sunrise, an action-packed show for all the family, will be appearing in Caroline Springs, with performances held at Caroline Springs Boulevarde.  Silvers Grand Magic Circus will be holding performances at Furntree Gully Hotel. Established in 1976, Silvers Grand Magic Circus offers a great show for the whole family, with everything from jugglers and clowns to acrobats, international performers and more.

 The Melbourne Cycling Festival & GO Bike Expo, held at Alexandra Gardens, showcases the latest in cycling products, accessories, events and destinations. Highlighting Melbourne’s passion for cycling, the event includes festivities that celebrate the end of Around the Bay in a Day.
When: Friday to Sunday, October 16 to 18
 Around the Bay in a Day, one of the biggest public cycling events, begins and ends at Alexandra Gardens with bike riders meeting the challenge of riding around Port Phillip Bay. Now in its 17th year, money raised from the event will go towards the official charity partner, The Smith Family.
When: Sunday October 18
 The Jayco Herald Sun Tour, Australia’s oldest stage race, also features the 'Go for your life' Tour Villages, which will be set up at the start and finish locations of the Race Stages. With entertainment, giveaways, activities and more, the Tour Village will make its last appearance on Lygon Street.

The Trots
 Victoria's Spring Racing Carnival showcases 50 days of premier world-class thoroughbred racing with 85 race meetings across the Victoria, including 20 Country Cups at venues such as Ararat. More than just a racing festival, the event highlights the finest fashion, luxury dinners and more.
