For many foreign tourists to Australia, their first port of call is usually Sydney followed by a jaunt up the coast to Queensland's beaches and a side trip to Uluru - Australia's red center.

For people who make the trip down south to Melbourne, the are usually pleasantly surprised to find a city with beautifully preserved European architecture, lush parks and gardens, world class sporting facilities and some of the best dining in Australia - welcome to Melbourne!

The center of Melbourne is referred to as the CBD and its streets form an orderly grid, making it easy to get around. Until recently the CBD was made up entirely of offices and shops. It was not surprisingly a very quiet place to visit. More recently people have moved back to live in central Melbourne, making it a lively place even on weekends.

Melburnians have traditionally lived in suburbs outside of the central business district. "Villages" to the north, east and south of the city each have their own distinct, individual character, whether it's shopping in South Yarra or eating pasta in Lygon Street, Carlton.
