AC/DC

AC/DC

AC/DC who have sold more than 200 million records worldwide started their career living and working in Melbourne.

In the book AC/DC Maximum Rock & Roll, their manager Michael Browning says: "If it hadn't been for Melbourne, AC/DC wouldn't have existed. There wasn't enough of a support system anywhere else in the country [p93].

The brothers Malcolm and Angus might have been Scottish (emigrated to Sydney when Anugus was 8), but make no mistake, without Melbourne there would have been no AC/DC.

You can read about more about AC/DC and its history in the links below.

AC/DC Melbourne

The first time I saw AC/DC was downstairs at Hard Rock* in 1974, most probably one of AC/DC's first ever gigs in Melbourne. I was hooked, the boys presence on stage was simply electric. 40 years on I can still remember the beat, the heat and the rock'n'roll...

The first few gigs there was no Bon (Scott) and the drummer and bass guitarists changed a couple of times as well. I am sure George Young (Malcolm and Angus' older brother) played bass one night. But then Bon joined along with Mark (Evans - super nice guy) and later Phil.

I am sure we were what could be described as AC/DC's first fan club. A group of friends who went wherever the band was playing. Over a 2 year period we would have been to hundreds of gigs all over Melbourne's live music scene, pubs and clubs including Hard Rock.

We would arrive early, help the roadies cart the gear into the venue and set-up. Often they would do two gigs in a night, doing a suburban pub first and then back into the city for the late session at Hard Rock. It really was a long to the top if you wanna Rock 'n' Roll, but we loved it. We were like a big family, the band, roadies and us tagging along, doing the gig and then back to the house in East St Kilda where the party continued. Years later, Malcolm would say that living together in that house in Melbourne was some of the happiest times of their lives.. also some of the craziest*. I wonder what happened to the bus?

Today, we take our son for dinner at the Croxton Hotel in Thornbury, and I smile when I think back to the heady days when it was one of the roughest pubs in Melbourne. I remember the all-in brawl, Bon wasn't backward when it came to looking after his mates, and I remember Phil of all people (we didnt get along at first) punching some guys lights out, just as the guy was about to dim mine.

I remember Battle of the Bands at Festival Hall (Skyhooks and Split Ends) and the Myer Music Bowl (score!) and then onto ABC in Ripponleigh for Countdown.

Who can ever forget Swanston Street on the truck for the video clip to It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll)?

I became the 'retriever' at some point, chasing around the beer soaked floors of Melbourne's pubs for Angus' school cap, you see, we had became roadies without pay. As a group of friends we did so many gigs that they all tend to meld into one but Doris (GOD bless her) loved every minute of it, as did we!

Its now rock'n'roll history after Melbourne discovered Acca-Dacca, so did the rest of the world, going on to become one of the biggest bands in the world.

AC/CD Notes

The original Hard Rock Cafe owned by their manager at the time (Michael Browning) was on the corner of Flinders and Spring Street, Melbourne.

Doris was a beautiful women struck down in her prime on a cold Brunswick Street, Fitzroy night in 1978.

AC/DC Lane Melbourne Victoria
ACDC Lane - October 1, 2004

After weeks of speculation, Corporation Lane in the city will be renamed ACDC Lane in a move described last night as a victory for rock 'n' roll.

Melbourne City Council unanimously voted to honour the Australian rockers, who in 1975 filmed their classic rock anthem It's a Long Way to the Top on the back of a flatbed truck travelling down Swanston Street.

Reason for the name: Corporation Lane was chosen for renaming in part because the band filmed the music video for "It's a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll)" on Melbourne's Swanston Street. ACDC Lane is near Swanston Street.

Other factors given include: AC/DC's status as cultural ambassadors for Australia, the band's ties to Melbourne, and the lane's position in the city's bar district.

AC/DC shared a house in 6 Landsowne Road, St Kilda East and based in Melbourne for many years in the 70's. 'Whole Lotta Rosie' for instance was named after Rosie, their next-door neighbour.

I was a regular at Hard Rock cafe. From the basement to the top floor, never bored!!!! We ate there, we danced there, we slouched there. AC/DC were blasting away and I think we invented head banging there LOL. Long live the 70's!

I was in Melbourne in the early 70's and saw AC/DC in one of their first concerts, can't remember the name of the pub, all you could see was the roof when you drove into the car park and we walked down into it, being a real (never been out of NZ girl back then) I was really shocked to see a man/boy in school shorts on stage rocking his little heart out... would love to know the name of the pub as 40 years later I am going to visit my daughter and would love to show her what I have been talking about all these years. Please can someone help??????????????

I too first saw AC/DC at Hard Rock Cafe in 1974. What a blast. After that at Station Hotel, Village Green, South Side Six. I think Malcolm might have been on bass at Hard Rock, no Rob Bailey, might be wrong. Hey, it was 37 years ago!! I am so glad I was able to see them in these places before they took on the world. Still the best band around. Dave
