Wilkins and Kent Furniture and Design

Wilkins and Kent specialise in locally made and designed timber furniture and homewares in Fitzroy and Melbourne.

The Wilkins and Kent Story
Jeremy Wilkins and Stephen Kent established Wilkins and Kent Furniture and Design in 1994.

Originally setting up their workshop in an unassuming Fitzroy side street the pair created quirky, brightly coloured bookcases, charming cupboards and chests made from bits and pieces reclaimed from skips or foraged from the tip. A style developed that was reminiscent of early Australian or depression furniture crafted from need and ingenuity. Wilkins and Kent originally catered to a very local clientele, trading directly from the side door around which the first makeshift ‘shop front’ evolved.

From here the business has grown to incorporate a modish Fitzroy store at 230 Brunswick St Fitzroy and from late 2008 a charming second store in historic Chart House, the original John Donne and Sons building at 372 Little Bourke Street.

The furniture has been refined somewhat, with a range of standard Australian timber pieces for dining, bedroom, audio visual, book and wine storage as well as bespoke furniture commissions. It’s still made by Jeremy and Stephen, joined now by a team of craftspeople in the original workshop behind the Brunswick Street store. The front of house has developed too - into a unique creative “family” of designers, writers, foodies, fine artists and curators.

“Our Fitzroy and CBD ‘corner shops’ are warm spaces filled with examples of our furniture and complimented with locally made craft, design, lighting, home and kitchenware, textiles, publications, Australian souvenirs and other objects – quite simply, things that we love.”
Practical knowledge and a clean, unaffected style have ensured the growth this creative enterprise for the last decade and a half.

The Wilkins and Kent philosophy remains true to the pair’s original intent: to combine simplicity of design with quality materials to create functional, spirited, well built furniture that can stand as a real alternative to mass production.
