The GablesThe Gables is simply one of Melbourne's finest venues for weddings, business functions or private dinner parties. Located in the heart of the Gascoigne Estate, East Malvern and surrounded by one hundred-year-old Cyprus trees, "The Gables"is a striking example of Victorian period architecture in the Queen Anne style.
No detail has been spared in the maintenance of this century old residence, from the stained glass windows and open fire places, to the classic furnishings and elegant period detailing.
The Historic Mansion The Gables is nestled in a quiet leafy Malvern East street and is popular for weddings and high tea. Back in the 1920s it was a favourite haunt of Melbourne's most infamous gangsters.
It had a gambling room upstairs and was the venue of a famous 21st birthday party thrown by Squizzy Taylor for his then girlfriend.
Recently renovated, the Gables has opened a Traditional Tea Room in the Peacock Room for a la carte lunch and morning and afternoon tea. The Peacock Room was originally the master bed room and has spectacular leadlight windows, an open fire place, chandeliers and an antique tea trolley - complete with an amazing array of home-made cakes and sweets.
Guests can experience a warm elegant atmosphere that includes fine china, crystal and silver. The tables have damask linen and upholstered chairs and are set with fresh flowers from the extensive gardens. The waiting staff have a fantastic knowledge of the history of property and can organise a tour of the mansion and the gardens which were laid out by Willian Guilfoyle of Melbourne Botanical Gardens fame.
The Tea Room is open from Tuesday to Friday, from 10am to 4pm.
