In Turkish culture, sofra is a small round table where people sit to share stories, food and coffee. The Sofra Festival will bring these things together in a celebration which will transform the Immigration Museum into vibrant space where visitors will experience the tastes, colours and sounds of Turkey through music, dance, food, arts and crafts, workshops and lectures, and cultural displays.
Graze on gözleme (savoury pancakes) – now a traditional Melbourne food - magical Turkish Delight and baklava (sweet pastries). Visitors will also be able to see authentic Turkish coffee prepared on a hot bed of sand.
The day-long stage program will include the colourful Australian Ottoman Mehter Band, the first Ottoman-style marching band outside Turkey, folklore groups and musicians. Workshops will provide information about traditional arts, and foods.
