Richard Simpkin | Locals of Frankston

Locals of Frankston by Richard Simpkin
FAC Mezzanine
26 June - 21 Oct
Free Entry

In December 2014 photographer and author Richard Simpkin came to Frankston and Cube 37 to shoot the photographic exhibition Locals of Frankston.

Richard photographed and documented their stories to present a true snapshot of the diverse range of people that make Frankston such a unique bayside city. The collection of portraits aims to promote Frankston in a positive way and celebrate a wonderful exhibition of just some of the interesting people that are known to many locally and make up the city of Frankston.

First displayed in 2015, these wonderful images are returning to the Frankston Arts Centre - and many will be available to view on the Arts Centre flytower at night and onboard Metro Trains, from 29 June until the end of August.

Born in Sydney 1973, sixteen year old Richard Paul Simpkin met rock group INXS, left school and spent five months with the band whilst they recorded their album X. Front man Michael Hutchence took Richard under his wing allowing the teenager to photograph him and they maintained a friendship until Hutchence's untimely death.

Richard has been working as a photographer in Australia, USA & UK for twenty five years and has met and photographed everyone from Nelson Mandela, Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck to Michael Jackson, Oprah Winfrey and Brad Pitt. In 2004, Richard was a finalist in the Australian Photographic Portrait Prize and his first book Australian Legends - People Whose Story We Should Know was released in 2005. His follow-up book, Richard & Famous - Twenty Years of Meeting and Snapping the Stars was released in 2007. In August 2014 he released 100 Australian Legends - The people Who Shaped a Nation.

Richard's photographic exhibition Richard & Famous has been shown in galleries all around the world including; Australia, Lithuania, England, Poland, Spain and Belgium. The exhibition has been curated by legendary photographers such as Martin Parr & Joan Fontcuberta. In 2013 he was nominated for the prestigious Deutsche Börse Photography Prize. The Prize aims to reward a living photographer who has made the most significant contribution to the medium of photography in Europe over the past year. He's travelled everywhere from Australia to the UK and many places in between to give public talks about his Richard & Famous exhibition and his Australian Legends books and World Letter Writing Day which he founded.

The Locals of Frankston exhibition will also feature on www.frankstonfaces.com - where people can go to get to know more about the heart of Frankston: the tens of thousands of people who live, work and study in our city. Help to spread the word, and change the conversation around our city, using the hashtag #frankstonfaces.
