Gradi at Crown: Piatti Dei Nonni Menu Explores the Power of Food as a Connecting Force
Because Nonna knows best.
Launching from 14 August, 2019, Gradi's special new Piatti dei Nonni menu explores the power of food as a connecting force.
Inspired by the treasured relationship with his own nonna, Gradi chef and owner Johnny Di Francesco set out to find three incredible nonnas to each contribute one recipe to the new menu.
Each nonna has a passionate story to tell. Nonna Rita has been cooking the same delicious cauliflower fritters for 45 years, cauliflowers which she grows on her farm in Werribee South. Nonna Concetta was taken out of school at age eight to help cook for her 11 siblings, learning the Piatti dei Nonni main course, spinach and ricotta cannelloni at this time. Nonna Elena's story is a heartbreaker ' she learnt the recipe for bigne the last time she ever saw her mother, on a trip to her hometown of Cugnoli, Abruzzo. However nostalgic she feels, cooking bigne also brings her happy memories and in turn brings her family much joy.
Making traditional Italian cooking accessible to all Melburnians, this menu is a family-friendly tribute to the unique way Italians celebrate storytelling through food ' and from a wider perspective, the cherished relationship many Australians have with their grandparents.
