Penguins, Plastics & You!

What better time could there be to learn about penguins, plastics and our impact on the ocean and its inhabitants than during World Penguin Weekend on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 April? The Antarctic Journey at the Nobbies plays host to a raft of inspirational presenters and activities that will pose some intriguing questions; What am I doing today, and What could I be doing tomorrow to have a positive impact on our little corner of the world.

Antarctic diver Matt McArthur will share his experiences from his recent voyages through the Southern Ocean and the Ross Sea where he encountered Adelie and Emperor penguins, but it doesn't stop there. Diver Matt will also talk about the biology, predators and the history of human interaction with King, Gentoo, Chinstrap, Rock Hopper, Magellanic and Macaroni penguins.

The three Rs come under scrutiny as you find out how to Live like your Nanna, and adopt some of the environmental practices used only a couple of generations ago. Reduce, reuse and recycle might be the terms we use today, but there wouldn't be too many grandparents out there who wouldn't have lived by that ethos.

Melbourne's Rogue Ginger, Erin Rhoads shares stories and plenty of fun and inspiration around her journey towards a zero-waste lifestyle while living in a big city. You'd be surprised what you can accomplish if you put your mind to it.

The Dolphin Research Institute is bringing along their magic drain which comes to life and demonstrates how our homes, schools and streets affect the health of the marine environment with their Don't Pee in my Pool demonstration. Plastic Free Phillip Island and San Remo will also be along to talk about what's happening in our own backyard and how you can get involved.

Throughout the day there will be activities like panning for nurdles in the sand and upcycling marine debris with Phillip Island Nature Parks Rangers. There will be a sewing workshop to make Boomerang Bags, and pocket-decoration sessions so the kids can decorate their own no-sew bags. Freedom Organics in San Remo will be there to spruik the benefits of plastic-free and locally sourced sustainable products, Westernport Water will be suggesting that our excellent water quality allows us to Choose Tap water instead of buying bottled water, and Bass Coast Shire Council will be showcasing how to get the most out of the new three bin system.

Entry is FREE with an Antarctic Journey ticket or 4 Parks Pass which includes entry to the Penguin Parade, Koala Conservation Centre, Churchill Island Heritage Farm, and Antarctic Journey at the Nobbies.
