National Sports Museum

National Sports Museum

The National Sports Museum located in the Melbourne Cricket Ground celebrates the place of sport in Australian life and will promote national identity and pride.

It provides a unique opportunity to showcase what Australian sportsmen and women have achieved on the world stage by exhibiting a collection of sports memorabilia from across all Australian sports in a single location.

The Museum houses The Sport Australia Hall of Fame, the Australian Gallery of Sport and Olympic Museum, the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame, Australian Football Hall of Fame and temporary exhibition areas addressing the sporting issues and events of the day.

Items on display have been sourced in the first instance from the Australian Gallery of Sport and Olympic Museum (AGOS-OM), which was established by the MCC in 1984.

In addition to items on display from the AGOS-OM collection, a range of organisations have made material available for inclusion in the National Sports Museum through a loan to the AGOS-OM.

More than 20 sports are actively collected with the top three sports represented in the collection being the Olympic Games (summer and winter), Australian football and cricket.

There is a wide range of material types held with documentation, photographs and garments accounting for close to 80% of holdings.
