Melbourne Zoo Twilights
One of the country's most ambitious and prolific live acts, Methyl Ethel arrives at Zoo Twilights with plenty to say. Hailing from Perth, frontman and songwriter Jake Webb has been interrogating the human condition since the band's first record Oh Inhuman Spectacle arrived in 2015, disrupting the alt-rock scene with its psychedelic touches and earnest lyrics.
A second record came soon after - along with stacks of acclaimed live shows - and now the trilogy has culminated with Triage, an impressionistic take on reconnecting and coming of age, drenched in tight synths, danceable beats and enough funk to have you packing away your picnic blanket - you won't be sitting much once Methyl Ethel takes to the stage.
"Perth's new pop masters" - NME
Soundtracking twilight are the swoony melodies and gauzy guitar tones of Hatchie (aka Brisbane artist Harriette Pilbeam), whose debut album Keepsake ballooned her already eager base of fans who connected to her hypnotic and hazy sound. Pitchfork called her the "dream-pop idol of tomorrow", and with the transcendent new-wave textures she's bringing to the Twilights stage, tonight you'll see why.
Sarah Smith will also be playing a DJ Set from 5.30pm when gates open until Hatchie takes the stage.
